Normally a third-string quarterback coming into a preseason game doesn't draw much attention. But it definitely did last Friday, when Erin DiMeglio got her first snap for the South Plantation High School. After all, DiMeglio may just be making Florida history, the Sun Sentinel reports. "I couldn't take the smile off my face," she says. "You'd think the other team would want to know why I'm there, but other players have been great."
State records indicate that 523 girls have played high school football since 1973, but it's unclear how many, if any, played quarterback. "I've never seen anything like this before," one local analyst says. DiMeglio's coach says he had other girls try out for the team just this year, but they couldn't cut it. "Erin can actually do what we ask of her," he says. Still, the 5-6, 160-pound DiMeglio doesn't think her real future is in football; she's just hoping her multi-sport athleticism will impress college basketball scouts.

my high school oldest son just said why do you actually tacle her and him and his friends wouldn’t want to hurt her.
This is plain stupid and the school is stupid for allowing this and if anyone thinks this is a good idea like the women NAZI’s then they are living in la la land
Considering how QBs might as well be wearing dresses anyway with the pampering they get from referees, I fail to see the problem of having a QB that actually does wear a dress.
he said where do you actually tackle her and his friends would not want to hurt her.

“... isn’t dubbed a hate crime”
I absolutely, positively disagree with allowing girls/young women to play football against the boys/young men. When the guy on the line pancakes her and hurts her, he’ll be a “coward” or a “guy that hurts girls”. If the guy on the line doesn’t pancake her, he’s a wuss. I would tell my son to slam her as hard as he would another teen. No mercy, no holding back. If she wants to play with the big boys... then play like the big boys.
In my state, some years back.. parent sued the school system to allow their daughter to play football. The school allowed it. The parents then sued the school system after their daughter got hit hard, broke her pelvis and ended up sterile. Some of the high school players are BIG. I mean really, really big. A six foot, six inch, 260 pound high school Varsity player is not out of the question. This is just another way of eliminating or “feminizing” football. IMHO.
Nothing defines modern feminism as well as encouraging young men to pound the snot out of a girl.
That is probably the largest load of BS that I've seen in ages. Title nine has assured that no matter how few girls are actually interested in sports, their programs are taken funded.
This despite the fact that almost no one wants to watch (help support) 90% of womens athletic events. When I was in college twenty years ago, the feminists wanted to lock people in for the duration, forcing them to watch women's basketball if they wanted to watch men's basketball. Things have only gotten worse.
If a girl isn't obese, she can likely get an athletic scholarship at some college in the U.S., because so many are given and so few want them.
Cool, then let's end male/female sports and make everything co-ed. That will be totally fair, right?
I’ve seen a HS girl play hockey on the boys team (no girls team available at that school) and there are a lot of young men -on the opposing teams- that wish she would go play with the girls too. She led the team in scoring, and in penalty minutes. She played tough but generally fair, didn’t take anything from anyone about being the only girl on the ice. If she (the qb) can hack it, fine.
The coach said several girls tried out, and this girl was the only one to meet the standard...I agree that the level of athletic ability should not be lowered, but if a girl can meet those goals, she shouldn’t be automatically rejected....
pure bunk I officiated football from Pee Wee through HS and one of the hardest hitters until she hit 9th grade was a girl. She was a team player, cute as a button and totally understood the game. The Freshman coach wanted her to try out but her mom wouldn't let her. Tried to recruit her for my karate school at that point. I asked her coach in Youth league why she didn't put her ponytail under her jersey and he told me he asked her to but she told him she wanted people she knocked down to know that "a girl put them on their butt" as she walked away from them. She was awesome.
“... their programs are funded”.
They are at the high school level as well. For every dollar given to the football team, the same amount MUST go to a female sport. Dollar for dollar. Yet... the money makers for the school come from MALE football and MALE basketball.
Why would any of you advocate denying someone with ability the chance to perform since you are basically advocating a different standard based on gender?
(Hint: You are employing the 'logic' that has given us affirmative action and disparate impact.)
Regards...
A local school has a girl on the team. My son knocked her down while blocking during an interception. I asked him if he apologized and he said “It’s football, dad. She was fine”. During game play, it is difficult to pick out the girls.
As long as it’s actually totally fair, and she’s actually the best QB candidate they have, then sure.
In reality, there are very few such situations, because they tend to take care of themselves in the long run, and boys generally play football without any girls, because boys are generally better at the game.
I served in the Army with females, including a female DS, and I went to AIT where there were female Marines in my classes. Most of them could hold up their end of the log okay. Sure, you had a few bad apples, but you have those in any group. This was in the early 1990’s.
It’s going to be difficult to convince me that a girl “can’t” play football with boys as an absolute rule.
