Sarah Palin: Third party is ‘a possibility’ if GOP forgets its conservative platform
Life Site News ^ | August 29, 2012 | BEN JOHNSON

TAMPA, August 29, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) –  Sarah Palin has said a third party may emerge if the Republican Party’s leaders abandon conservative principles.

Asked if the GOP’s increasing fractiousness may lead to a new party taking its place, Palin replied, “If history is an indication it is a possibility – if the Republicans don’t remember what the planks in the platform represent.”

“Look what happened in the mid-1800’s. The Whig Party went away and the Republican Party surfaced, because the electorate got sick and tired of the party fighting for power and not doing the will of the people,” Palin said on Fox News.

Palin’s words echo those made by the founder of a conservative third party, Howard Phillips of the Constitution Party

“The Republican Party is going to go the way of the Whigs in the 1850s,” said Phillips, who served as the first presidential candidate of what was then known as the U.S. Taxpayers Party, in his 1992 acceptance speech. “It will die the death of a double-minded man – who talks one way but lives in conflict with that which he professes to believe.”

Phillips, who headed the Office of Economic Opportunity during the Nixon administration, frequently likened the modern GOP’s refusal to take a definitive stand protecting all unborn children to the Whig Party’s refusal to oppose slavery – a dodge that led to its implosion and the birth of the Republican Party.

The Constitution Party platform opposes abortion under all circumstances.

The former Alaska governor has in the past bypassed a liberal Republican in favor of a more conservative, third party challenger. In 2009, Palin endorsed Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman over pro-choice Republican Dede Scozzafava for a congressional race in New York.

Democratic operatives also claimed Palin supported Pat Buchanan‘s third party presidential candidacy in 2000, because she wore a Buchanan button as she welcomed him during a visit to Wasilla. In fact, she served on Steve Forbes’ campaign that year.

However, in 1995 and 2000 Palin’s husband, Todd, registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, which has endorsed the Constitution Party presidential candidate since 1996

Palin is not alone in her ominous message to the Republican elite. Phyllis Schlafly said House Speaker John Boehner was “making a mistake” when he said “I’ve never read” a party platform, then specifically noted his exceptions to protecting some classes of the unborn. “It’s a very grassroots document that I think the politicians ought to listen to,” she said

A number of other Republicans - including former Congressman Tom Tancredo, Alan Keyes, and U.S. Senator Bob Smith - have cast their lots with the Constitution Party since 2000, only to leave shortly afterwards. The party’s 2012 presidential candidate is former Republican Congressman Virgil Goode of Virginia.

Palin, the Republican party’s 2008 vice presidential nominee, was not publicly invited to speak at the Republican National Convention. John McCain will address the convention tonight.

I like Sarah Palin, really, I do. And I thought McCain’s selection of her as VP candidate was a smart move. But FR posters have an unrealistic opinion of her influence on the national stage. I wish it wasn’t so.

Ted Cruz

Invited to speak at CPAC, Rightonline, SRLC and several foreign events.

After all the crap piled on her, she rebounds and becomes a rally point for the TP nd she’s only 48 with time to grow!!!

Yeah, unrealistic. Guess we’ll just go back to the cave and let the GOPe run things.

The GOPe needs to get in the back of the bus or end up on their own short bus.

LOL, just 2+ years ago she was a Republican first. Re-read the threads, only you were ahead of them all :)

AP reporting that FNC (Republican party TV) canceled all her scheduled interviews tonight saying they couldn't fit her in. I guess that has her in a tizzy. She gets worked up over these things.

Republican TV is not going to allow talk of a third party on that channel.

Palin Facebook tonight :

I'm sorry Fox cancelled all my scheduled interviews tonight because I sure wanted to take the opportunity on the air to highlight Senator John McCain's positive contributions to America, to honor him, and to reflect on what a biased media unfairly put him through four years ago tonight. Granted, our honored and esteemed war hero has gone through much more than the liberal media can ever do to him in their efforts to harm this patriot. I look forward to hearing his words to his fellow Americans tonight more than any of the other convention speeches. God bless John McCain. Thank you for everything. And happy birthday, my friend.

Jeez. Didn’t the party sway when it chose John Kerry’s #1 choice for VP as it’s Presidential nominee 4 years ago?

What’s her angle or she is really that loyal to that crazy old coot?

RE :”What’s her angle or she is really that loyal to that crazy old coot

What is eerie about that facebook post is that it is very similar to what the Palin character said in the Movie ‘Game Change’ when she was arguing that she wanted to get on TV and give a VP consolation speech, and was told “NO”. She was arguing that she wanted to praise McCain's years of service.
Recall this is the movie Palinistas hate, they loved ‘The Undefeated’ because it makes her look like a Biblical figure, you have to see it to believe it.

Why anyone would want to hear talk about MCcain this week is beyond me. He is totally irrelevant. In fact Al Sharton was praising McCain last night for not 'playing dirty' like the others. Code words for 'thanks for losing and electing Obama, John'.

If Romney is elected, as looks increasingly likely, conservatives will be kicked to the curb. A year from now, people will be screaming "Free Paul Ryan!".

It won't matter. A RINO is a RINO. And that's what Romney is.

We need to form a Conservative Party as Harper did in Canada along Reaganite/Thatcherite lines, a conservative coalition that stands for something.

Best,

Chris

I think of him as a liberal.

Ryan was not hired to make Romney conservative, Romney was hired to make conservatives go along with Romney.

If Romney is elected then Ryan's job will be to get bipartision bills through the Republican house just as with that Debt limit bill last year that Ryan is NOW making believe that Obama passed it on his own and he opposed it, when he was all for it.

Ryan is a big government big spending conservative who apparently pleased the so-cons, up until now. That is why he is running away from the debt limit bill he praised last year and telling those over 55 that there is no limit to the money the gubment will give them. .

third party woulld result in a split of voters that would give democrats control over our politics for several election cycles. They could do a lot of damage in that time.

It looks to me like the needle is moving and I think the inclusion of Paul Ryan on the ticket is going to be a game changer if we make sure this election ends the Obama administration.

I said this before the Primaries even started.

IMO, this is the last chance for Republicans to realize they are supposed to be CONSERVATIVE.

Paul Ryan is nothing but window dressing. If Romney wins, Paul Ryan will have as much influence on policy as the WH janitor. Mitt Romney invested all that time and money to make sure that Mitt Romney's ideas get enacted.

Ryan was hired to convince his Tea Party buddies in the house to go along with compromise Senate bills so Romney can sign stuff.

Ryan went along with every big spending Bush initiative in GWB first term, including deficit funded entitlement expansion to get Florida for GWB in 2004.

All this rhetoric is just that. If they get elected their daily backtracking will be the story of everyday.

If Romney gets elected I am not going to be caught by surprise due to Republican spin. There was a time when I actually believed Republicans.
