Akin’s Options
The National Review ^ | August 29, 2012 | John Fund

Posted on 08/29/2012 11:44:29 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

............[Mary Matalin]urged that Akin drop out, to be replaced by Ann Wagner, a former co-chair of the RepublicanNationalCommittee, who is the GOP nominee for Akin’s vacant House seat.

Akin “may be dug in, but he’s not going to have a shovel to continuing digging, because he’s not going to have any money,” Matalin told ABC. “We’re going to win Missouri. Ann Wagner is going to end up being our candidate. The party is going to get Ann Wagner in.”

Wagner aides hotly dispute that their candidate is involved in any negotiations about switching races. But sources close to Akin acknowledge that he is monitoring developments in the race, including campaign donations and his standing in the polls, and that it isn’t out of the question he will change his mind.

Should Akin decide that his sliding poll numbers — he now trails McCaskill by ten points and many of his own supporters want him to exit the race — dictate dropping out, he will certainly want a say in who replaces him. John Brunner, a wealthy businessman, and Sarah Steelman, a former state treasurer, both challenged him in the GOP primary and are viewed as unacceptable by Akin forces. On the other hand, Wagner is respected in the Akin camp and a sufficiently conservative presence to satisfy Tea Party members who are suspicious of anyone the Missouri GOP establishment might anoint.

Should Akin leave the race and be replaced by Wagner, both candidates would have to petition a court to get off the ballot before September 25. But state election laws would allow a swap in which Wagner took Akin’s place and he reclaimed the Republican nomination for his House seat. His current district leans strongly Republican; he would be likely to hold it against a Democratic opponent this fall...........

I support the conservative on the MO ballot. Do you?

Do a thorough review of my post history and you’ll see what I support. And please cast the evidence of your mental illness in the direction of someone else please!

I believe the majority of Freepers don’t give a crap about social issues and actually align with the democrats.

It's the same old story. Conservatives are the first to eat their own rather than get up on their hind legs and defend them like the Democrats do.

“In the real world, if you do something really stupid and the people who pay your way tell you to find something else to do and cut off your money, you can call it what you want, but I call it getting fired.”

It is an inappropriate analogy, as the candidate doesn’t get the money, but the campaign does. If money flowing picked the best candidate , we wouldn’t have Mitt Romney.

You clearly do not support the conservative on the MO Senatorial ballot.

Got it.

House Atreides, third notch.

What poll are you looking at? Every poll i have seen, except PPP (a Dem outfit) has him down.

"Real leaders don’t follow polls. Real leaders change polls.” - Chris Christie (last night)

Christie was thinking about Akin last night. Akin is a fighter, a real leader.

That is why they coined libertarianism.

They are lefties that like conservative economics, and they are too ignorant to see the impossibility of that contradiction, succeeding in a democracy.

Well, you obviously didn’t do your research or you’re too stupid to understand what you’ve seen. I suspect the latter.

Wow, evidencing BOTH mental illness as well as stupidity—you can’t have much of a life with that combo. So move along little creature and look for your “fourth notch” to carve in your deranged little mind.

“Obama and Reid must exit in November. We need the Senate.”

Yes, it would be great to see Reid out of power. And a HUGE disappointment and disaster if not (we’ll have trouble undoing Obamacare, although they can probably defund and declaw it.)

I was so happy and laughing in 2002 when Daschle “deeply saddened” lost the Senate majority (without which “Bush tax cuts” never would have happened), and there was a cartoon of him with a donkey’s head in a bed. Want to see that happen again.

This poll was commissioned by FRC, one of the few conservative groups that backed Akin to the hilt. In it, it shows ...
“McCaskill holds a 58% to 34% lead over Akin among very liberal voters, ..”
Why would 34% of liberals go for Akin? That wont hold. And - Akin has 22% favorable with Democrats? This poll’s favorables are way off from other polls. It doesnt jibe with 2 other polls from professionals (Ras, mason-dixon) that have Akin down 10. IN fact, if you take out that odd-ball Democrat support number, you’d get back to Akin down 10. So I’d trust that before I’d trust a poll from a group out to justify their position.

The FRC poll is a "fundraiser poll" -- designed to give Akin a claim to possibly winning, thereby boosting his fundraising.

Pretty transparent actually...

No one has said he doesn’t have a right to stay on the ballot, he can, he’ll lose, but he can. Sadly he’ll not only lose, but he’ll be a drag on every other election in the nation now, and cost close races.

As to elections not being over for Dems.. I seem to recall them ignoring the rules and changing their candidate beyond the last minute in NJ when it was obvious he was going to lose.... So take that tripe nonsense elsewhere.

Todd needs to take the deal.

Retreat and live to play another day. Who knows, with the passage of time you might get another chance to run and WIN a U.S. Senate seat. Do the right thing, Todd.

Actually the stupid remark that Trent Lott made was “I’m sorry”. I found nothing wrong with what he had said. Akin should have never apologized

Good point. Although I think we actually ended up better off without "Vacant" Lott gumming up the Senate with his RINO schemes, the fact is that Republicans have a kneejerk reflex to cower and bare their throats whenever the whorehouse media acts ominously toward them. You can see it right here on this thread. We need more fighters to tell RNC chiefs and their media masters to FOAD.

There is no deal. Anyone saying so like Matalin and Fund is prefabricating. From the article:

“Wagner aides hotly dispute that their candidate is involved in any negotiations about switching races.”

How many times does a Congressmum-to-be have to say “NO” before she will be taken seriously???

I’m sure you can provide poll results for that tripe because someone has provided poll results that it is tripe:

Now quit your whining and go win some races.

Hope springs eternal for those who want to see Senator Claire McCaskill defeated, Todd’s career salvaged, humiliation avoided and the pro-life and conservative movement strengthened.

Todd, do the right thing. Take the deal and if one is not offered step aside and let someone else who is not fatally damaged lead the fight to defeat McCaskill.

The RNC chair said he would not send a penny to Akin if the race were tied. How important can it be?

The penny pincher would rather pinch his penny than win a Senate seat.
