Opponents defeat feared ‘power grab’

TAMPA, Fla. — Mitt Romney’s campaign has stepped back from a major confrontation with fellow Republicans who were irate over what several ranking party officials had called a “power grab” by the presumptive nominee.

The Romney campaign had won approval earlier of a change in the party’s presidential nominating rules that would allow Mr. Romney, if elected president, to veto already elected delegates from the 50 states and five territories to the next GOP nominating convention in 2016 and beyond. Even if Mr. Romney were not president come January, the rules change would have allowed future presidential nomination candidates the same vetting powers.

National Rifle Association President David A. Keene said on a Washington Times webcast from Tampa on Monday that the Romney rules changes were unnecessary, and wrong politically and in principle.

The Romney campaign’s aim was to avoid seating delegates who they said were flying under false colors — supporters of Texas Rep. Ron Paul serving as “Romney delegates” in states Mr. Romney won during the nominating battle.

Under the current rules, states hold primaries and caucuses to determine how many delegates will be awarded to each candidate, but state parties convene at a later date at state conventions to name the actual delegates. Under the proposed rules change, individual delegates would not be chosen for the convention unless they had been certified by the presidential nominee for whom they were bound to cast their vote.

In an emergency meeting on Monday, Republican National Committee Vice Chairman Jim Bopp negotiated agreements with three representatives of the Romney campaign to prevent an embarrassing floor fight on Tuesday, at the very time when Mr. Romney will be trying to project the image of a united party bent on defeating President Obama on Nov. 6.

The power to change rules between conventions remains in place. There is still work to do.

Its like dealing with muslims. Any compromise with them is their chance to regroup and rearm.

Well done. But Romney and his campaign operatives have some explaining to do. The attempt to destroy grassroots involvement in the nominating process is unacceptable. And the fact that the effort was largely ignored by cable and radio hosts is also very troubling.

I don’t like the way Romney got the nomination just like McCain and now this.

I agree. This sucks so much. How can you rally and make calls for someone who wants to make sure you have no voice now or ever?

Agreed, but dear Lord, there is too much at stake for all of this same old, self serving attitude by ALL of them. romneyRYAN asks RP to speak at the convention, but so far RP refuses to endorse romneyRYAN, so that falls through, and the GOPe decides to run this stuff through... shakes head.

Unbelievable.

May God guide our course, and share His strength.

I am bummed. But glad romney's spearhead attn. lost this massive attempt to suck life out of individuals and place it ( power to veto delegates ) in the hands of nominee. Talk about a pathetic elitist screw the hard working volunteers piece of work.

I wish I could look romney in the face and ask him why, exactly why, this attempt to change the rules even raised its ugly head.

Ron Paul is an idiot, and Ron Paul supporters tend to be impossible to work with, and dishonest.

Ron Paul did not win Iowa.

Why should Ron Paul have more Iowa Delegates than Santorum or Romney, who both blew Ron Paul out of the water in Iowa?

If Ron Paul supporters showed up en masse at these conventions, it just means supporters of the other candidates have to work harder next time, should RuPaul run again.

On foreign policy, I’ll have to agree with you: he is an idiot.

So, the question is, should the RNC have the power to change rules between conventions, and should the candidates be able to pick their own delegates, should the ones the conventions pick be insufficiently orthodox (at this point in time, as far as I know, that rule change was re-instated)? These rule changes affect ANY delegates, not just unruly RuPaul delegates.

I do not believe that the candidates would have the power to PICK their delegates, only the power to approve or veto those delegates, based on SUPPORT of the candidate involved.

It’s effectively the same thing. They have to replace the unapproved delegates with others that they prefer, right?

Delegates and ALTERNATES are sent by the States.

And, YES, I do think we need to find a way to make sure the Ron Paul kooks don’t pull this stuff 4 years from now.

Yes, the delegates are still sent by the states, but now the candidates get to override the wishes of the states, should said wishes be insufficiently orthodox. I swear I heard that delegates could be replaced.
