MO Poll: Akin, Not Romney Hurt by 'Legitimate Rape' Remarks

A new Missouri poll indicates Rep. Todd Akin’s rape remarks have not hurt Mitt Romney in Missouri, but the comments about “legitimate rape” and the controversy that ensued have damaged Akin, especially among women voters.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch poll found Akin, who had been leading McCaskill by five points and was tied with the Democrat among women voters before his remarks, now trails McCaskill by 9 points overall and by 18 points with women voters.

Democrats have tried to tie Akin’s comments to Romney, but the poll found Romney still leads President Barack Obama in Missouri by 7 points, 50-43.

These numbers come out after Akin vowed to stay in the race at a press conference on Friday. The deadline for Akin to withdraw was last Tuesday. Akin had until September 25 to petition for a court order to remove his name off the ballot, which would allow the Missouri GOP to select a replacement candidate. Akin's is a race Republicans must win to get control of the Senate and, until now, was assumed to be a shoo-in. McCaskill is still viewed more unfavorably than she is favorably in the poll.

The ‘legitimate rape’ reference is something that Republicans put in House bills regarding medicaid funding (rape loopholes) so they look a bit cowardly running away from it now.

Romney's comment “Rape is rape” over-simplifies the issue. Wasn't the intent to deny medicaid funding in the case of statutory rapes?

In one case in Maryland a women charged rape after she gave consent but changed her mind in the middle of the act, the judge threw the case out and outraged feminists.

And the stress of having family killed, homes bombed, no food, or running water, made the German women raped by the russians in berlin impervious to pregnancy.

All of this is well known and has been published in peer reviewed journals along with Akins science.

There was misquoting of what Akin said. It has been posted on here a number of times and can be found on many websites and probably even YouTube.

Furthermore, there is not a wealth of scientific knowledge to indicate that women are capable of biologically and anatomically fending off a rape-induced pregnancy.

Face it, Akin messed up bad.

Isn't it funny that Akin was the candidate McCaskill wanted to run against, and the only people in polls who want him to stay in are democrats.

The only thing McCaskill is mad about is he didn't open his mouth after September 25th.

Did your mother ever say to you first impressions mean everything, and Akin's first impression was on of an arrogant know it all fool.

Akin can be replaced by an articulate pro-life candidate, who will also replace McCaskill in the US Senate.

Or did he mean REAL rape?

Maybe Missouri voters and conservatives don't want a Joe Biden like gaffe prone person as Akin as their Senator.

This was a guaranteed pick-up for the GOP. But Akin has single-handedly turned it into a guaranteed retain for the Dems. We need every single seat we can get to overturn ObamaTax. Having only 51 Republicans won't do it, because at least two of our current lot will be blackmailed into voting with the Dems. We need at the very least 52 seats. We cannot afford to have Akin remain in this race.

And for those of you on here who continue to back Akin as the GOP nominee, congrats. You are now on the same side with Claire McCaskill. Because if it weren't for her $2 million in ads for Akin, we wouldn't even be in this mess.

It was much more than an unfortunate choice of words. Akin was asked for the answer to a question that has been rehearsed repeatedly in the minds of anyone supporting the pro-life movement: "Are you pro-life when it comes to babies conceived from rape?"

Akin had the opportunity to reiterate that he stood for the sanctity of viable life in the womb no matter what. But instead, he chose to deny the possibility that such life could even exist.

It doesn’t surprise me that the Missouri voters can differentiate between the two. His past remarks, and the remarks he’s yet to make, may cost Akin the Senate seat but I never really thought it would cost Romney the electoral votes.

At this point any true conservative in Missouri should plan on voting for Akin if he continues to foolishly stay in the race until November.

For those folks who wish to support Akin by donations and working for his campaign, have at it. He’s apparently in to stay and I hope he wins although he has damaged his chances.

For both those who support Akin and those who choose to not do so, there are an abundance of other DESERVING conservative Republican Senatorial candidates who are very deserving of our support. The ones that my family and I have chosen to support with our limited time and funds are:

Josh Mandel in Ohio,
Ted Cruz in Texas,
Rick Berg in North Dakota,
Jeff Flake in Arizona
Deb Fischer in Nebraska,
Richard Mourdock in Indiana
Denny Rehberg in Montana
Pete Hoekstra in Michigan

and, possibly:
George Allen in Virginia and others can be added to the list.

I think that all believers in our conservative principles will agree that this is a list of conservative Republicans very deserving of our support and well-wishes for victory in November.

We have significant political battles across the nation and need to remember those. Support these folks to the extent you can.

If Akin is a fool for one mis-statement, what are the women who would vote for a person whose party encourages the killing of babies? A single mis-statement versus someone who would ignore the totality of the person’s actions and listen to the people who encourage killing babies? Only a fool could change their vote this easily.
