The Social Security Administration released its annual statistical report on federal disability insurance last month, revealing that at the end of 2011 there was a then-record of 8,575,544 workers collecting federal disability benefits and among them were 1,304,851 doing so because they suffered from mood disorders.
The incidence of mood disorders among disability beneficiaries was not proportionately distributed among the states and territories, according to the official SSA statistics. Some locations had much higher percentages of disability beneficiaries diagnosed with mood disorders than other locations.
In each month since December 2011, SSA has reported, the overall number of Americans collecting disability has continued to rise. In August, according to SSA, a record 8,767,941 American workers collected disability. Also, in addition to the 8,767,941 workers collecting disability payments, there were 1,853,651 eligible children of disabled workers collecting additional benefits and 164,651 eligible spouses of disabled workers collecting benefitsbringing the total number of disability beneficiaries in August to 10,786,510.

I have: Heart disease, edema, type II diabetes, peripheral artery disease (PAD), hbp, bone spurs and several other ailments. Can barely walk, can’t sit or stand for any kind of long period and have lost most of my stamina. Three tries and I’ve given up. I’m not “disabled” to the bureacrats at SS.
This economy and the unemployment is depressing a lot of people.
My wife has genetic Degenerative Disc Disease, has had major surgery for it, confined to mostly sitting for two years, was wheelchair bound for nearly half a year (and that was when we finally got one). Twice “not disabled”
I’m sure that if the SS would dig just a bit they will find one or two ‘doctors’ handing out this diagnosis for a cut of the take. IOW, fraud.
Just like the ‘pain clinics’ that are nothing more than drug mills, this has the same odor....
Someone here, on another SSI thread, told me you just tell them you’re a drunk or drug addict and it’s pretty much an automatic “Yes” with no waiting. What kind of country is this?
I’d like to see a better demographic breakdown of this group. I wonder if there isn’t some ‘crony Socialism’ going on.
Did you have a lawyer who has experience dealing with them? That’s the only way that legitimately disabled people are able to get benefits...and yes, it takes three or more applications.
My sister is developmentally & physically disabled, and has been since birth. She COULD have qualified as a child on the basis of measure IQ alone, but my parents wanted her to have a “normal” life to the extent possible. She worked for many years, and largely supported herself but at 40, she needed hip replacements (due to her physical deformities), and it was clear that her mental function was also declining and she could no longer live unsupervised. It took THREE tries for her...the third, with an experienced attorney, was a breeze.
It was infuriating, as there are so many people who are not truly disabled who seem to just fly through the system.
If you have a recommendation, please FReepmail me. Thanks!
I’ve been in a foul mood ever since Obama was elected. Does that count?

You know, I wish I could recommend someone for you. But, I think you will have to find someone in your area as they have State hearings for appeals.
I know in her case, they had the “date” set (it was EIGHT MONTHS to get a hearing in front of the judge). Had he met my sister, it would have been an open and shut case. But, apparently, this judge reviews the cases a couple of weeks before the hearing (I assume that is common)....because upon reviewing the file, he just approved it.
That tells me that there are two key points.
1. The Lawyer must be someone that they know; and one that they know doesn’t file bogus claims. This should be simple, because most good ones won’t take your case unless they know they will win. In our case, he was paid out of the back-dated benefits...she received a lump sum payment from the date that she originally applied, which was over two years earlier.
2. The second thing that it told me was that the low-level bureaucrats have a giant red “NO” stamp that they are trained to use automatically. I think that they also have a giant green “YES” stamp for people that they know...LOL! Once the judge was involved, the case was looked at on its merits.
Ask your Doctor(s); they may have some names for you...ours did.
Reminds me of the Greek “Island of The Blind”.

Puerto Rico, the 57th state.
Those kind of disability payments are called “Crazy Checks” down in West Virginia.
In the same way some diseases cluster around toxic waste dumps, the incidence of fraudulent disability claims tends to cluster around the offices of particular toxic lawyers.
particular = particularly
As a police officer, you meet interesti.g people. Cant tell you the number of people I have talked to that were running around, all hours of the night, getting into trouble. When you get their info, and ask where they work...its always...”I am on disability” when asked what their disability is...8 times out of 10 it “ I have anxiety” and these are people in their mid 20’s. I report them to SSN, but no idea what happens next.
