New York (CNN) -- All nine people injured in Friday's shooting in front of the Empire State Building were wounded by police gunfire, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Saturday.
The officers unloaded a total of 16 rounds at a disgruntled former apparel designer, killing him after he shot and killed a co-worker and engaged in a gunbattle with police, authorities have said.
Police said an investigation is under way after one officer shot nine rounds while another shot seven. Three victims suffered gunshot wounds, while the remaining six were hit by fragments.
The gunman, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard in the late 1970s, had two rounds left in his .45-caliber pistol. It holds eight rounds, Kelly said.
The violence erupted Friday morning just as visitors began to queue up to ascend the famous New York skyscraper in one of Manhattan's busiest neighborhoods.

To be honest I am not that familiar with guns and which is more appropriate in what circumstance.
If I were forced to choose I would say give them the gun Dirty Harry used and turn em loose on the bad guys
Since you brought it up, do you feel police should be subjected to the same gun laws as legitimate law abiding citizens?
I believe they are.
So citizens in NY have same gun rights as do those in government?
“...the City of New York will be responsible...”
If course. That’s where the (taxpayers’) money is! Dead perp has squat.
Good Lord.
LMAO!!!
LOL My daughter would look like swiss cheese if she got shot everytime she wasn't where she was supposed to be.
Oh..that’s right! Forgot about that one. LOL!!
It was a target-rich environment.
Watch the video on CNN. One cop stands behind the other cop to shield himself. He’s lucky he didn’t shoot his partner in the head. The cop also looked like he was shooting like a gangster, turning the pistol on its side. Unbelievable, the morons who are left with guns once the citizens are disarmed.
Guiliani was on radio with Hannity saying we need to ‘test’ people when they buy guns so we know only ‘qualified’ people are using them.......Rudy is still leaning left and NOT using an oz of common sense.
I sure hope Romney doesn’t bring any antigun urges, because it is my experience (New York State) that an antigun Republican can do worlds more damage to gun rights than an antigun Democrat.
I’m surprised this is seeing the light of day.

Where'd ya go?
With a corrupt mayor at the top how can anyone expect anything more from the union goons infecting the NY police department?
Maybe the lawsuits will finally bankrupt the city once and for all and they will be able to purge the freeloaders from their ranks and start over????
Eh.... One can dream right?
Prayers out to the victims.
That .44 Magnum was a real cannon, but with Callahan shooting it, it was a sure hit.
The shooter was probably motivated by the Obama ad that preaches that it is OK to HATE someone who lays you off. Someone from the family of Mr. Ercolino should get a prime time speaking slot at the Republican convention.
Thanks, but I was being entirely sarcastic. Have you seen the video? The bad guy had his gun pretty much pointed at the police officers before they even had their guns drawn. In reality, in that situation, I would do just what they did; draw as fast as I can and start blasting. That guy only has to twitch his finger one time and you’re a dead son of gun. Plan B would be to turn around and run as fast as possible.
