He's the "social media president," having been the first one in the modern era to take full advantage of the ways the Internet can connect politicians to people. But a new study reveals that 70% of President Obama's 19 million twitter followers are completely fake.
President Obama's Twitter account has 18.8 million followers -- but more than half of them really don't exist, according to reports.
A new Web tool has determined that 70% of Obama's crowd includes "fake followers," The New York Times reports in a story about how Twitter followers can be purchased.
"The practice has become so widespread that StatusPeople, a social media management company in London, released a Web tool last month called the Fake Follower Check that it says can ascertain how many fake followers you and your friends have," the Times reports.
"Fake accounts tend to follow a lot of people but have few followers," said Rob Waller, a founder of StatusPeople. "We then combine that with a few other metrics to confirm the account is fake."
The campaign denies having purchased any of them, but it's certainly funny to think that the overwhelming majority of Obama's Twitter followers don't actually exist!

They are? I haven't heard a thing from Romney or Obama regarding Twitter followers. While the media may be trying to create a story, both candidates seem to have ignored it, at least so far.

I don’t actually owe you any kind of response here. Since politics these days is a running joke, I suppose the importance of this in your mind is part of the punch line. But, just so you know, even though the whole thing is essentially meaningless, I was also getting bashed around for saying positive things about Akin. The real problem isn’t my opinion with some people. It’s that my opinion does not coincide with the GOPe narrative. I’m also quite proud of the fact that I refused to compromise with you guys insulting me for not agreeing that Mormonism is Christianity. So bugger off and try commenting on what is said, and not the stuff you pull from the trash because you don’t like reading what was said.
I meant in the sense that they seriously have someone take the time to buy thousands to millions of fake profiles just to inflate something as meaningless as a twitter follower number. Politics is such a joke, that the professional politicos in the world consider it important.
And that is exactly what they are
