Todd Akin: That Rasmussen poll showing me down by 10 points is great news

Doug Brady

I’m beyond speechless. What is this guy drinking? Stacy Drake, one of my fellow C4P editors, summed it up best in an email:

Who knew Baghdad Bob moved to Missouri?

With that, via Jim Hoft, anyone who goes to Todd Akin’s website will have the privilege of reading the following pearl of wisdom:

St. Louis, MO: The following statement was released by Perry Akin, Campaign Manager for Todd Akin for Senate, in response to the Rasmussen poll released this morning: “The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48% after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is. If she can’t break fifty percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down. Todd is in this race to win; we will close this gap and win in November with the support of the grassroots in Missouri and across America.”

This is an example of the breathtaking ignorance we’re up against, folks.....

Sorry, "put a sock in it" doesn't get many takers.

Amen to that...That kind of crap doesn't win people over.

Let me explain it to you even though you probably won’t listen. In the example belong the numbers are arbitrary and for illustrative purposes only.

Let’s say he has a 1% chance to win and 99% chance of losing.

If the calculations are only about him, then stepping down is a bad move, because stepping down reduces his chance to 0% from 1%. So a selfish person who’s calculated what it means to him personally have no reason to step down, even if his chances are .1%, that’s still better than 0%.

From a bigger picture perspective, if he steps down and somebody else with a 60% chance to win replaces him. Then the chance for him goes down from 1% to 0%, but the chance for the GOP goes from 1% to 60%.

So there are 2 possibilities. He either still thinks he has a great chance to win, in which case he’s in denial. Or he doesn’t want to give up his 1% chance for the party to gain that 59%, in which case he is selfish.

So he is either deluded or selfish, and most observers would probably conclude that it’s a combination of both, he is both overestimating his own chances, and he is refusing to take a person hit to allow someone with a better chance to win to take over.

By selfishness I mean his adamant refusal to stand aside. It leaves me with the impression that he believes no one but him should take the fight to McCaskill. Maybe selfishness isn’t quite the right word. Maybe it’s arrogance, or as you say, something as simple as confidence, misplaced or not.

Whatever it is, it’s not helpful in terms of making Harry Reid the minority leader, at least as far as I can tell.

The incumbent-not-reaching-50% rule only works when the challenger is close behind, say within 5% of the incumbent. The mechanism behind it is the undecided break to the challenger say, by 75-25. If the current numbers hold, it’s not enough to put Akin at top. Will things change if donors return to him? Maybe, but his comments—no doubt from being hurt by them abandoning him—tend to burn the bridges.

I hope the man pulls it off.

Me too. I don't have a dog in this fight but it sure would be fun to see all of the crow dinners being served.

I fully support your liberty to bash yourself repeatedly on the hand with a claw hammer as well, but I do not advise it, especially if it will achieve little and could get a Democrat elected.

If you want to support a write in candidate, do so, though write ins seldom win. The odds favor trying to salvage Mr. Akin, and given the terrible voting record of his opponent, I think it is worth a shot.

I am starting to wonder about Sarah Palin. Instead of always supporting Tea Party candidates, she seems to always support projected winners. This makes me wonder if she is indeed what she says she is, or maybe has just a bit too much Republican establishment opportunist in her.

I don’t support a write-in campaign, nor have I advocated for one on this thread. Don’t know where you got that idea.

I support replacing Akin on the ballot with another conservative pro-life Republican. There is still time to do that until Sept. 25th, but Akin must step down first, and the sooner the better.

As for claw hammers and hand bashing somehow electing Democrats, that’s either a poor analogy or you’re mixing your metaphors.

Dear Gay Conservatives, Rovites (and other establishment republicans), baby killers, cowards, and DU trolls: you have convinced me to put my full support behind Akin. Thank you!

Akin does not realize he is doing the bidding of the DNC. But he is.

Okay, Congressman Akin. If you are really someone who wants to fight, come out with guns blazing. Start talking about the real rape done by Bill Clinton. Start talking about the assault on Kathleen Willey in the Oval Office. Talk about how women were threatened. Talk about how thugs beat up and left for dead Gary Johnson, who lived next door to Flowers at the Quapaw Towers. How he had a security camera that caught Bill going into her apartment numerous times with his own key. (I have access to the raw footage of Johnson’s interview.) Talk about how Clinton gave government jobs in exchange for sex. How the fat intern, whom they called a stalker, was given TOP SECRET clearance at the Pentagon.

Bill and Hillary Clinton had their own WAR ON WOMEN. Challenge the press and get in their faces. I will prepare you for the interviews. When you do that, Congressman Akin, I will make a donation and support you. I will help you write the commercials and not charge you anything.

Bob Ney has a staunch conservative voting record too:

Would you endorse him for a campaign bid?
