Huckabee digs in behind Akin
Politico ^ | // | Alexander Burns

Todd Akin hasn't had many high-profile supporters with him in the trenches this week, but Mike Huckabee became an important and emphatic exception Thursday afternoon, sending a message to his own supporters accusing Republican elites of trying to drum a good man out of a winnable Senate race. Here's what Huckabee said in an email to his list this afternoon:

Party’s leaders have for reasons that aren't rational, left [Akin] behind on the political battlefield, wounded and bleeding, a casualty of his self-inflicted, but not intentional wound.

Now is the time for courage

The time for courage was the day before yesterday; sadly, Akin failed to show any, and decided to go ahead and lose the potential 51st GOP Senate seat by staying in the race.

I'd say these circumstances have less to do with courage and a whole lot more to do with hubris.

George Allen was not a racist when he had his macaca moment.

Todd Akin was already incurably stupid when he had his magic uterus moment.

And you reveal what the attack on Akin is ALL about. You don't want the Republican party to be a pro-life party. You'd rather "win" by marching down a trail of dead, bloody, unborn baby body parts. Well, real conservatives are fed up with that attitude. We want candidates who unashamedly speak up for pro-life, anti-abortion values and implement them while in office. There are some issues where there is no room for compromise. So, like the GOP elites, you either have a screwed-up, immoral value system, or you're just a coward who won't fight for what's right if you perceive any risk to it at all. Bottom line, the idea of becoming the "John Stewart" party is an abhorrent, disgusting one. We should use our bully pulpit to educate and inform people of the changes this country really needs, not to water ourselves down to the lowest common denominator.

I have about had it with out of state lecturers about how to win a state wide election in Missouri. Reality is what it is. Unfortunately the Akin cultist are more interested in making him their martyr than defeating Claire.

I have repeatedly stated IF Akin is the only conservative/Republican on the ballot I will vote for him.

Have you ever heard of that saying 'good intentions pave the road to hell.... HELLO AKIN!!!

Take your ignorant judgments and bash them else where. Oh, and while you are at it enjoy your paving job, you are very good at it.

You mean the potential 54th seat -- right???

That is if the Rasmussen numbers are correct.

If Romney and the other establishment types would learn to STFU, it would have been much easier to win and all this would have been forgotten

Agreed. But, in this day and age, emotions trump logic.

Regardless, if not for the ill-conceived 17th Amendment and its unintended consequences, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The "GOP establishment" is not evil, nor sinister, nor even slightly creepy.

What it is, though, is terrified of being picked on by the mainstream media.

Quivering, puking, bedwetting terrified.

If the "GOP establishment" had just sat back and let this thing play out for a couple of days instead of having a five-alarm public aneurysm due to their terror of being called bad names by the NYT and NBC, we'd be looking at a different - and less cataclysmic - situation right now.

ridiculous statement and it misses the main point by a mile. there are issues here that are infinitely MORE IMPORTANT THAN AKIN. he alone is responsible for making himself a political liability.
It isn't just about Akin; it's about the stir he's caused because of the subject matter he spoke of. Huck is in his corner in that regard.
MR. RUSSERT: But you said you would ban all abortions.

GOV. HUCKABEE: Well, that's not just because I'm a Christian, that's because I'm an American. Our founding fathers said that we're all created equal. I think every person has intrinsic worth and value...

MR. RUSSERT: But many Americans believe that that would be, that would be you imposing your faith belief...

GOV. HUCKABEE: But, no. It's not a faith belief. It's deeper than that. It's a human belief. It goes to the heart of who we are as a civilization. If I believe that your intrinsic worth is not changed by your ancestry, your last name, by your IQ, by your abilities or disabilities, if I value your life and respect it with dignity and worth because it is human, then that's what draws me to the inescapable conclusion that I should be for the sanctity of every and each human life. --Mike Huckabee, Meet the Nation, Dec. 30

It’s becoming clear as crystal that the real reason Akin is being thrown under the bus is his stand against abortion.

I could not disagree more. There are plenty of viable candidates who are pro-life, don't say stupid things out loud, and can beat McCaskill. Why the opposition to the other candidates in the primary? Either of them could have stepped in to replace Akin and would have cleaned McCaskill's clock. Even someone like Talent or Kit Bond would have crushed her.

Instead, we are stuck with a pro-life candidate who sounds like a fool, who will lose an easily winnable seat, who could jeopardize Romney's chances of winning Missouri, and who will set back the chances of getting other pro-life GOP senators into positions of leadership in a GOP Senate. Six terms in the House gave Akin a taste of the power he craved in the Senate, and he chose to grasp at it instead of doing the honorable thing and withdrawing.

The dozens upon dozens of posts that skip right over Akin's "stupid" comments and focus on the issue of abortions in the cases of rape and incest say otherwise. It has become clear. The GOPe is for some abortion. Mutt openly campaigns on it.

All the GOP needs to do is pick up 4 seats to unseat Harry and they are currently ahead in 8 and that is without Missouri. So quit telling us that the sky is falling over Missouri.

Sure. You and Claire McCaskill both agree! Like telling Daniel Pearl that it's ok, the blood is helping cleanse the wound!

In reference to my earlier post to you, I don’t know Missouri’s population dynamics, but in Oregon, 57% of the state’s total population lives in the Portland Metro Area. That’s what explains its disproportional weight, electorally speaking.

I have not checked last census numbers but Kansas City, MO (NOT Kansas City, Kansas) and St. Louis were fairly close in population numbers. Now there are numerous 'burbs' around each of the named cities above. So sometimes here on the Kansas City side there can be conflicting interests on the ballot from county wide versus the Kansas City. These are usually what draws out the unions.

Unions carry a fairly big weight, and they tend to get energized when some particular ballot measure gets put on the ballot...

Well I didn’t read or see any of those things, and I didn’t talk to any of those people. But on Monday morning I started calling and urging Akin to drop out. By Tuesday PM it was as clear as anything has ever been that he did not possess the political or intellectual skills to get himself out of the hole he was in.

And anybody who thinks that Republicans defending Akin or even just shutting up about him would have helped with the MSM is DELUSIONAL.

The double standard is alive and well and while at times it may be overcome, this was/is not one of those times.

I’m glad there was so much push-back against him, it was all that could be done to inoculate the rest of the republican candidates.

Another silver lining MAY be that the Dems will overplay this. An abortion, etc. celebration at their convention likely will not play well in Peoria or anywhere else.

How is that nuts? Rape is about control, not sex, impregnating a woman is one way of maintaining control over her long after the sex act is finished, studies have been done to confirm this and its part of standard abnormal psychology doctrine unlike what Akin has claimed which is just bat#$%$ crazy.

And then along comes Akin pumping life into the liberals sacred cow 'women's right to choose' and now who do you think those sensitive so call independents are going to vote for....
What is your opinion? Do you think a woman should have the right to end the life of her child if conceived during the course of a rape? And if you do, what is your stance on abortion in general?

Yeah, just like Romney and his minions sabotaged Mcain/Palin in 2008, so Mittens could run in 2012.

The problem at the national level is that they are all selfish rentseeking POS.

Hucksters RNC speaking slot should be removed immediately and filled by Palin. Huck can’t be trusted not to bring it up.
One week Huck is a hero (regarding the Chick-fil-A turnout), the next he's a bum. Why are folks so fickle?

This truly is a moment highlighted in the famous quote: "Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me. "

Mike Huckabee has always been a principled social conservative, and he is precisely right about an orchestrated attack on a pro-life candidate. The following paragraph, though, is an indication that Huckabee has realized that social conservatives are no longer welcome in the GOP. It is an astounding thing for a major republican leader to write with such obvious bitterness. You MUST read it:

Who ordered this "Code Red" on Akin? There were talking point memos sent from the National Republican Senatorial Committee suggesting language to urge Akin to drop out. Political consultants were ordered to stay away from Akin or lose future business with GOP committees. Operatives were recruited to set up a network of pastors to call Akin to urge him to get out. Money has changed hands to push him off the plank. It is disgraceful. From the spotlights of political offices and media perches, it may appear that the demand for Akin’s head is universal in the party. I assure you it is not. There is a vast, but mostly quiet army of people who have an innate sense of fairness and don't like to see a fellow political pilgrim bullied. If Todd Akin loses the Senate seat, I will not blame Todd Akin. He made his mistake, but was man enough to admit it and apologize. I'm waiting for the apology from whoever the genius was on the high pedestals of our party who thought it wise to not only shoot our wounded, but run over him with tanks and trucks and then feed his body to the liberal wolves. It wasn't just Todd Akin that was treated with contempt by the thinly veiled attack on Todd Akin. It was all the people who have faithfully knocked doors, made calls, and made sacrificial contributions to elect Republicans because we thought we were welcome in the party. Todd Akin owned his mistake. Who will step up and admit the effort being made to discredit Akin and apologize for the sleazy way it's been handled?

The Akin Assault by the GOP is not just another indication that social conservatives are unwelcome in the Republican Party. It is an attack designed to destroy any voice they might have.

If we don't wake up, we will be having in America Christians tried for "hate speech" in very short order.
