Now is the time for courage (Akin, abortion)

Exclusive: Janet Porter joins pro-life leaders as they stand with Rep. Todd Akin

Want to know why the Republican Party is in such trouble? I believe it comes down to one word: courage.

When Democrats misspeak, we make them vice president. When Republicans misspeak, Republicans are the first in line to throw them under the bus.

When Rep. Todd Akin stood for protecting all innocent human life in a recent interview, he used a word with more than one meaning. He used the word “legitimate” before the word “rape” to mean “real,” “forcible,” a tragic event that “really took place.” Anyone who doesn’t think false claims of rape can be made should check with Norma McCorvey, the “Roe” of Roe v. Wade. The infamous abortion case, based on her false rape claim, has resulted in the deaths of 55 million innocent human lives.

But because “legitimate” could also modify the word rape, some in the Republican Party are practically writing Willie Horton ads about it, pretending that the congressman is “pro-rape” and wants to let rapists out on furlough. This “interpretation” of the congressman’s words doesn’t resemble reality, and everyone knows it.

If Republicans love their country, they will quit using fiction to shoot their own and focus on the real enemies of life: Democrats Claire McCaskill and Barack Obama, who stand for legally sucking the brains out of half-born babies in a procedure called partial-birth abortion.

In America, we shouldn’t kill people for the crimes of their father. And in politics, we shouldn’t kill statesmen for a badly worded sound bite.

Thankfully, there are men and women of courage who stand with Rep. Akin, beginning with the founder of National and International Right to Life, Dr. Jack Willke, who said:

“Congressman Todd Akin remains a strong and courageous

The words “legitimate rape” are not the problem( as has been pointed out, that can easily be clarified as “forcible”), it’s the rest of the quote that is the problem:

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

That is a direct quote. It’s a dumb statement; in the same league as “the world is flat”; “the Sun revolves around the Earth”; “I believe in the Easter Bunny” dumb.

You know, I was one of the first on these forums to excoriate Akin.

If the Republican party did that though, they could get my vote in November, instead of Virgil Goode.

Romney is costing the Republicans more than Akin is.

So, ah, you think Romney is the opnly guy who could defeat Obama?

Doesn’t seem to be doing such a hot job of it so far.

Now lets take a trip to Realville. Akin will lose. Rasmussen (the most accurate poll) has him down 10 pts. Screw courage, I want the GOP to take the Senate.

I read his statement over and over and without the screaming from the press and (moderate) republicans I just can't see why there is such ado because of it.

Ditto...

Will conservatives and Republicans ever get serious about running the MSM blockade and start bringing this message to the people - airing the Democrats' dirty laundry - even if it means the MSM attacks them as "mean-spirited" etc.?

Nope.

They don't have the guts.

I mean, is there any identifiable group we should care less about, than women who support abortion?

They're more disordered than the homos.

No HE lost the election by making a stupid, ignorant comment. Of course the press and the Rats were going to take full advantage of it. He should have pulled the plug before the deadline the selfish turd. A coupe more winners like this and the election will be handed to the left.

So you are not courageous if you don't stand up for some wacko who happens to be pro life. Give me a break! Pro life beliefs and intelligence are not mutually exclusive.

The country and my children's future are far more important than defending this goof ball. There are plenty of pro lifers who could step in and defeat McCaskill and put this issue to bed.

And now he'll have a convenient scapegoat in Akin if he loses in Nov.

No Akin was trying to minimize the implication of his pure Pro-Life position that women should be forced to carry children conceived from rape. He was saying women who are raped do not conceive because their body has a magical property to prevent conception. Therefore, women who claimed they were raped and want to abort a child are lying.

He had no business mentioning the “theory” that the bodies of women being forcibly raped put up natural barriers against getting pregnant. That was an eternally stupid thing to bring up. Later, he said he checked with professional sources and now admits that what he said is medically, scientifically untrue.

He then apologized for saying it.

When he was asked about abortion in cases of rape, all he needed to say was, I believe a baby is a living human being and it doesn’t make sense in my beliefs to abort the baby who is alive and who is innocent.

To absurdly start an argument over the “theory” that a woman who is forcibly raped is unlikely to get pregnant, and in the process of bringing that up, actually use the words “legitimate rape”, is so beyond the pale it’s beyond the belief he “went there”.

Even HE admits that now.

He just doesn’t want to suffer the consequences of leaving the race.

A coupe more winners like this and the election will be handed to the left.

From where I'm standing, that's inevitable when nearly everyone running is on the left.

Most women can see something wrong with his remarks.

Or as Paul Ryan says, “rape is rape”.

Akin is too ignorant to be a senator.

Rather than explain what Akin said why not start posting the actual comment.

“It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Mr. Akin said of pregnancies from rape. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”

Politically imprudent, absolutely. But lets not overstate it.
