A Powerful Movie (Thomas Sowell on "2016")
Creators Syndicate ^ | August 21, 2012 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 08/21/2012 12:08:47 PM PDT by jazusamo

Years, and sometimes decades, pass between my visits to movie theaters. But I drove 30 miles to see the movie "2016," based on Dinesh D'Souza's best-selling book, "The Roots of Obama's Rage." Where I live is so politically correct that such a movie would not even be mentioned, much less shown.

Every seat in the theater was filled, even though there had been an earlier showing that day, and more showings were scheduled for the rest of the afternoon and evening. I had to sit on a staircase in the balcony, but it was worth it.

The audience was riveted. You could barely hear a sound from them, or detect a movement, and certainly not smell popcorn. Yet the movie had no bombast, no violence, no sex and no spectacular visual effects.

The documentary itself was fascinating, as Dinesh D'Souza presented the story of Barack Obama's life and view of the world, in a very conversational sort of way, illustrating it with visits to people and places around the world that played a role in the way Obama's ideas and beliefs evolved.

It was refreshing to see how addressing adults as adults could be effective, in an age when so many parts of the media address the public as if they were children who need a constant whirlwind of sounds and movements to keep them interested.

Dinesh D'Souza's own perspective, as someone born in India who came to America and became an American, provided a special insight into the way people from the Third World often perceive or misperceive the United States and the Western world.

That Third World perspective is Obama's perspective, D'Souza demonstrates in this documentary, as in his book — and it is a perspective that is very foreign to that of most Americans,..

The unfortunate thing is, the people that NEED to see this movie will be the people that DON’T see this movie.

So true. I don't think this will lead to any conversions. I am grateful it was made and will support their effort to tell this story.

It is supposed to start showing here on the 24th. My Mom and I are planning to go and hopefully bring the rest of the family. It should be worth the 50 mile drive.

I am becoming very much a recluse, but for this movie, upon Dr. Sowell’s recommendation, I will venture out to a theater when opportunity presents.

Whoever actually wrote Obama's book -- like whoever did the publicity for it -- is getting him into a whole lot of trouble.

The concept of the book was to turn his life into a narrative about race, so the "mother from Kansas, father from Kenya" and the "search for my father" stuff was played up and made into something more than it actually was in Obama's life.

Now Dinesh, who's got a real fixation on the British Empire picks up on that and makes Obama into an anti-colonialist, even arguing that he doesn't care about his brother because his brother doesn't share their father's anti-colonial views.

If there's one place where the "narcissism" diagnosis fits it's here: Obama doesn't care about his brother for psychological reasons, not political ones. It's not the way that family was -- if it even was a family.

The problem with Dinesh's thesis is that you can't prove it or disprove it. A lot of Black and White radicals were drawn to anti-colonial movements in the 1960s. It's natural that a half-Black half-White son of an African anti-colonialist would be interested in those movements. But how do you prove that this engagement was something deeper than a passing interest?

The other problem is that our assessments of empire and imperialism are bound to be more complicated than simply "for" and "against." Make the long-dead British Empire the centerpoint of contemporary American politics and people whose support you want won't follow you very far.

Obama himself proved that his anti-colonialism is bull$hit. He is a black man who has had a free ride since his freshman year of high school. A LIFE LONG FREE RIDE.

“............however inconsistent it is with the rhetoric that gained him the highest office in the land.”

I’d say that’s Dr. Sowell calling Obama a liar again. He’s right.

Thanks for the ping jaz. If the movie ever comes our way we’ll be going to see it. Prefer it would be available on DVD for home use though. We despise those little theaters of today.

The Third World, or anti-colonial, view is that the rich nations have gotten rich by taking wealth from the poor nations. It is part of a much larger vision, in which the rich in general have gotten rich by taking from the poor, whether in their own country or elsewhere.

Whatever its factual weaknesses, it is an emotionally powerful vision, to which many people have dedicated their lives, and for which some have even risked their lives.

Isn’t it odd that where Leftist revolution against the colonizers has occurred the people of the subject country do not prosper other than the leaders of the revolution that is.

It generally is not until the Leftist are finally removed from power and free elections and capitalism is instituted that the people begin to prosper.

How is it that Leftist like Obama can not see the clear evidence of the tide of history is with capitalism. Capitalism brings the most prosperity to the most people.

It's not the way that family was -- if it even was a family.

I believe the latter part is probably the case. From what little I've read his grandfather Dunham was a good friend of Frank Davis, a communist that mentored Barack. I just felt there were few family ties between Barack and his fathers side of the family but don't know it for a fact.

You're right. It must be that Obama and Leftists like him know full well about capitalism but could care less about prosperity for the majority of people. They only care about themselves, their own prosperity due to their egos and narcissistic ways.

Obama hates America for giving him a life long free ride, and for allowing him to become a multi-millionaire. I can sure see why he hates us!
