AKIN WILL WITHDRAW: WHAT HAPPENS NOW? (return of Sarah Steelman?)

AKIN WILL WITHDRAW: WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Mike Flynn

........

At some point before 5pm CDT tomorrow, Akin will file papers to formally withdraw his name from the ballot. I realize today Akin was defiant and said he wasn't a "quitter." His supporters claim he will stay in the race because he views his candidacy as "providential", but this is just the bluster before the end. Everyone is entitled to 24 hours to try to right their ship, but Akin did nothing today to cauterize the wound. When Reince Priebus, Ann Coulter, NRSC and Tea Party Express are all united in saying you should quit, you've pretty much run out of options.

..............

After Akin withdraws the decision to name a replacement falls to the 15 members of the state GOP central committee. Speculation is currently focused on two candidates Akin defeated in the recent GOP primary; businessman Jim Brunner and former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman.

Brunner had the backing of many GOP insiders because of his ability to partially self-fund his race. Steelman had the backing of Sarah Palin. They both lost to Akin in large part because Sen. McCaskill ran a lot of ads "attacking" him for being too conservative. (Think of it as a Republican dog-whistle.) Among the two, Steelman probably has the edge as the GOP may want to put the Akin debacle to rest by nominating a woman. It is also expected that Palin would campaign aggressively for Steelman, which would be helpful as 2012 is turning out to be a base election....

“Dear Congressman Akin-—Please don’t quit and make me feel bad about the $2 million I wasted on you to win the primary. Sincerely yours, Claire McCaskill.”

There are two potential problems with picking Wagner: (i) she will be seen by some as “too establishment” (not a problem for a GOP-leaning CD in the St. Louis suburbs, but might be a problem statewide in 2012) and (ii) if you pick her, you need to find someone else to run in MO-02, which currently is considered a slam-dunk for the GOP largely due to her huge fundraising advantage over the hapless Democrat candidate but could be competitive if she is replaced on the ballot and the Dems then get their sacrificial lamb replaced (surely they can get a judge to sign off on it)with Russ Carnahan or something.

I think they’ll avoid picking Brunner or Steelman, nor will they pick one of the current House candidates (Emerson would be bad not only because it would turn the MO-08 competitive, but because she’s quite RINOish). Talent would be my preferred candidate, but he has said he isn’t interested—not sure whether his protestations are real or if he’s just pretending. I’m thinking it will be Schweich. But if Bond is interested they might pick him as a way of removing all doubt over who will win (and providing an olive branch to the other candidates, who know that Bond wouldn’t run for reelection in 2018).

Well, Exeter turned out in the end to be really a pretty cool guy... ‘specially considering that he was a space alien and all that stuff...

He’s married, she home schooled all of their children.

Just imagine if Sarah Palin had been on the ticket and started talking about creationism. We might as well not vote because we all know that the media chooses what is truth and politically correct thought.

I hope this is based on some real inside information. Aikin just cut a new commercial begging forgiveness that should air today. They played it on the Bill Bennett show. I have a scary feeling the S.O.B. is going to try and fight through this.

Yup. It was played on the morning shows and pundits believe he may just stick it out. 5:00 p.m.couldn't come quick enough.

What he said is ridiculous on its face. he can be a rockribbed glow in the dark conservative and it’s meaningless because he will never prevail in light of that statement. and after a GOOD week of positive progress nationally we have this moronic mess front and center and threatening the chance to overturn obamacare with a republican controlled Senate. There’s no amount of explaining/apologizing/breastbeating that is going to make this go away. he has to go.

The most worried person in Missouri right now is not Akin but Claire McCaskill.

"Please don't quit, Akin! Dammit! I have money invested in you!!!"

With the McCaskill money in view I begin to wonder if Akin isn't a Donk plant. If he stays in there will be a nationwide rape-flavored media circus for the next 90 days or so.

I could just be drinking the conspiracy Kool-ade. Then again, the stakes are very, very high, and not just for Missouri. If this guy's pigheaded arrogance costs us races in other states-or the Presidency-at this critical (dare I say final) hour, well, I pray to God that we don't have to go there.

“My fellow Missourians. I have decided to remain in the race and turn it into a total crapshoot. Yes, I know it greatly increases the chances of the Democrats retaining their Senate seat here plus it even endangers the chances of Romney to win Missouri but, hey, I’m not a quitter. On top of that I have certain responsibilities to fulfill. In particular I have a financial responsibility to my opponent who invested 2 million dollars to get me on the ticket.”

I just saw McCaskill on the tube expressing support for Akin in the face of those wascally weepublicans urging him to quit. Is Akin soooo clueless that he can take solace in McCaskill’s very temporary “support?”

“What he said is ridiculous on its face. “

What did he say exactly? The word Legitimate or believing the studies that may or may not be true?

How is this different from politicians spouting off on global warming? They are ridiculous, but because the media deems it correct thought and knows it to be true in their minds, the politicians are not ridiculed and run out of town. Or forced off the ballot.

Sarah Palin is a creationist. Many in the middle laugh at the thought and the media joined in on the ridicule party. Did we demand that she resign for the good of the party’s chances of winning?

The media says “Boo!” and we run and hide.

He said that a woman can volitionally prevent conception in the case of a legitimate rape. my best friend is a prolife ob/gyn, she was appalled at the ignorance of the statement. The media is biased, the media is left wing, YES! all of that. but conservatives cannot make baldfaced stupid statements and not have repercussions, because WE KNOW the media will never give them the pass joe biden gets. so we have to be BETTER and SMARTER and know that stupidity will kill us.

There has to be a reason why McCaskill spent a couple of million to get Akin on the ticket. Think about it.

By the way, you cannot equate creationism with the ludicrous remark made by Akin. global warming is not even its equal in ludicrousness.
