U.S. Rep. Todd Akin stood firm against mounting GOP pressure for him to quit Missouri's Senate race on Monday afternoon, tweeting: "I am in this race to win."
A telephone poll conducted on Monday by North Carolina-based Public Policy Polling showed Akin still leading incumbent U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill by one-point, 44 to 43 percent, despite the growing controversy over his remarks that women can somehow avoid pregnancy after forced sex. PPP said it would release more details on the poll later this evening. The Democrat-affiliated firm said it shows little change from its previous poll before the controversy, which also had Akin leading by one percentage point.
"The Missouri thing just speaks to hyper partisanship - Republicans don't even really like Akin but they'll vote for him over McCaskill," PPP said on Twitter.
PPP said 75 percent of Missourians polled thought Akin's comments were "inappropriate." . . .
Akin, who is running for U.S. Senate against incumbent Claire McCaskill, has until Tuesday at 5 p.m. to withdraw without a court order, according to Missouri election law. That law allows candidates to leave the ballot 11 weeks before election day, otherwise he would need a court order, which he can get up until Sept. 25. The Republican state committee would have two weeks to name a replacement, under the law. . . .

This election needs to be about McCaskill, Obama, the economy, jobs, etc., not about rape. Akin fell for a trap and gave the Dems the golden soundbite they were looking for. We must defeat ObamaClaire, no matter who does it.
It’s interesting that Claire is so forgiving of Akin’s comment and doesn’t want him to drop out. Now this jackleg poll is showing Akin with a lead. The only people who are supporting Akin are democrats now. They are probably donating to his campaign now.
Geez I hope he drops out so we have a chance of retaking the Senate.
agrees 100%
I hope Akin stays in. I would hate to see him drop out because of this whole stupid thing - as you say, he bit the bait.
He was up 11 a week ago.
He was up by 7 during the flak beginning over the weekend.
Now it’s a dead heat. Given his poor performances today on Huckabee and Hannity, I’d guess he’d lose by 10+ points in November.
On Monday, as Republican groups pulled funding from his campaign. . . . Crossroads GPS, which has spent millions on ads in Missouri attacking McCaskill, confirmed on Monday that it has canceled a new ad buy for Akin.
If big money is pulled back, that could force Akin's hand.
Hang in there Todd! Everyone knows there’s no such thing as rape. A woman can run faster with her dress pulled up than a man can with his pants pulled down!
I don’t care who ya are! That there’s funny!
For pity sake.
DEMS are claiming to support Akin. They know what they're doing.
Akin is post toast (and deservedly so.)
.
It reads to me as though the Dems are trying to keep him from dropping out so they can run over him. Right now he’s the best thing going for the McCaskill campaign.
What do the kin of Akin say?
do we really need another 2006 type year where the democrats manufacture some sort of diversion and feign outrage in the media to suppress the vote?
That this whole thing is akin to a nightmare. They're achin'.
That is funny.
Dead heat now, before everyone’s heard about this, and before the Dems have started to really pound on this issue, which they will surely do between now and November.
Azra Akin
GUILTY? NOT GUILTY?
According to Ann Coulter, IIRC, the NY Times said Dems crossed over in the primary to vote for him.
GUILTY AND PUT HER IN HANDCUFFS!!!!
Not looking good for Akin. 54% of Missourians want him to step down.

Akin should stay in the race to the end.
As stupid as he is, he’ll fit right in with the US Senate!!
No, it’s not funny :-(
