COMMENTS: Here is the real problem. My own investigation reveals the following:

1 - one night he was drunk and partying with young women; he drove off a bridge, ran away like a coward, did not get help for 8 hours, and let the young woman die in an air pocket in 6 feet of water

2 - at a conference, he brutally bit and raped a nursing home operator and told her to put ice on it

3 - in his office, he assaulted a woman pleading for a job whose husband had just died

4 - on Easter Sunday, he showed off his Bible for photo ops in the morning, then got a BJ from an intern in his office right after church

5 - he exposed himself to a woman brought to his hotel room by troopers and told her to kiss it

6 - he gave government jobs in exchange for sex

7 - he had thugs slash a woman's tires, kill her cat, and threaten the lives of her children if she testified in a sexual harassment case

8 - he and his brother had sex and cocaine parties with underage girls

9 - behind the scenes, his evil satanic wife threatened women who might come forward and cause him grief

I think what he might have meant to do is distinguish statutory rape and violent rape (which he called “legitimate” to distinguish it from statutory where there is consent).

That is my take, but when given the opportunity to explain it that way on Hannity, he just muddied the waters even more.

He believes abortion should be illegal in any and all circumstances, which is an honorable view shared by many conservatives. Why didn't he just say that and leave it there? Instead he started splitting hairs and making ignorant junk science claims.

Since I posted this thread, I wanted to say to all of you that you do not have to shut up. This is not a gubernatorial election. It is not a state senate election. It is not a state house election. It is not a state comptroller election. It is not a Missouri county judge election. It is not a dog catcher election. We who are outside the state clearly have nothing to say in those. But this is a United States Senate election and affects all of us.

Sola Veritas, I know you had a very, very bad day because of JimRob’s post today. Have a beer and relax. We are not shutting up. He may be a very good man but this was a grand slam home run of screw ups. If you can recommend the conservative for whom you voted, we will give any support we can.

There is nothing minor about this gaffe. There's a continuum of gaffes between "minor" and "fatal," and if you're a Republican this one falls much, much closer to the "fatal" end of the scale. Admittedly, holding ourselves to a higher standard seems to put us at a tactically inferior position in the culture wars, but we can grow our group by being attractive by holding a standard. If we don't hold a standard, we're as bad as they are.
