Pressure mounted on Rep.Todd Akin to quit his Missouri Senate race today despite his repeated refusals to step down over his incendiary comments about rape.
Earlier in the day, moderate Republicans campaigning in bitterly contested battle ground states called on Akin to exit the race. By late in the afternoon, conservative elements of the party, including an influential super PAC and the Tea Party Express called on him to terminate his race for the good of the party.
Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer said Akin's remarks that women rarely became pregnant from "legitimate rape" were "unfortunate and inappropriate" and added that they had become a distraction that would cost Republicans the chance to beat Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill and ultimately any chance at winning the Senate.
"It is critical that we defeat Senator Claire McCaskill in November, but it will be too difficult to achieve that with Todd Akin as the conservative alternative. He should step down and give conservatives a chance at taking back the Senate in November," Kremer said in a statement.
The legal deadline for Akin to withdraw his name from the ballot is 5 p.m. Tuesday.

It does when both the liberal media and Republican establishment want you out along with the "Tea Party" types hostile to social conservatism.
Maybe the Dems will pay him handsomely to stay in the race, so McCaskell will have smooth sailing to re-election.
Two million in ads from McCaskill to help Akin in the primary and now she's not attacking him relentlessly?
Akin and McCaskill are much too cozy.
And if he stays in, they will keep going nuts all the way until Nov. 5th. It’s unfair, but it is what it is. If this goes on it will become “Macacazilla” and drown out our message nationwide. We can’t afford this. Akin has to go ASAP.
Really? Would that be the social conservatism that has discovered the gene that repels sperm that result from a rape? Did you even read what he said?
Fair or not (IMHO) he just killed any chance at a victory in this election cycle.
LLS
I am sick of the double standard. The Dems say and do way worse things and THEIR party stands behind them. ATKINS should stay, F Colter and the rest. In a few weeks this will be all but forgotten. Look at Ted Kennedy, he KILLED a woman and stayed in, Clinton Raped several woman ans is still around. Atkins made a mistake, apologized, now lets move on. Its the RINOs that want him out because he is too conservative for him. WE HAVE TO STAND BEHIND OUR PEOPLE.
I agree to an extent, but IMO this particular situation is not a hill for conservatives to die on.
Its funny, but...
When a lib pol screws the pooch, most other libs jump in to cover for him/her...all the while screaming taken out of context.
When a conservative pol screws up (like Akin), most conservatives do not try to hide the truth or make excuses. They demand the pols ouster.
Libs should learn a lesson from the conservatives.
I think the difference is based on principle, but it’s not like we have much of a choice in the matter. The libs can get away with it, because they can rely on the media to back them up when they close ranks. We don’t even have that option, we’d all be vilified by association.

Good point.
Sad to see so many GOP start acting like whiny liberals. Akin apologized, he shows remorse, lets move on
Akin should stay on just to torque the liberal PhonyCons in the GOP
I heard him on Hannity too. He was in denial - detached from reality. I don’t even think he was putting on a “game face”. He just didn’t have a clue as to the effects of what he said. It was sad, really. I wanted to feel sorry for him, but all I felt was anger at his stupidity, selfishness, and obliviousness.
How is it possible that someone of his position could live in LaLa Land? I am dumbfounded.
One person libs did not cover for was Anthony Weiner. They pretty well piled on him immediately and cut him loose.
I know practically nothing about this Senator, but found myself stunned by the colossal train wreck of his comment. Tell me the guy was having a stroke, and he might deserve a pass, but otherwise, let him retire now. Sometimes one big mistake can torch a career. I smell smoke.
Obama did not appear on the scene in 2008 and all of a sudden put this country in on the wrong track. Guys like Akin had their shot and in the majority and did NOTHING to be proud of, if they had they would not have lost the majority in 2006.
Pelosi, Reid, and Barry did this nation great harm when they had the majorities and they controlled both branches from 2008 to 2010, but the GREATEST harm was done by Bush's treacherous boy John Roberts in 2012. Some of the damage done could have been reversed if Bush had done his homework and not nominated a fellow Rockeller globalist elitist.
I cannot defend Akin. I cannot defend ANY Republican currently holding elected office nor can I defend the two bailot guys running on the Repulican Elite ticket.
An unfortunate choice of words, yet I think I know what he meant. Please tell me why this statement is nuclear blast insensitive. I really need to understand.
