Todd Akin will stay in Senate race, apologizes on Huckabee radio show
St. Louis Post ^ | Monday August 20, 2012

U.S. Rep. Todd Akin apologized on Mike Huckabee's radio show today for comments he made about rape, and said he will remain in Missouri's U.S. Senate race.

"I'm not a quitter," Akin said.

"We all make mistakes," Akin said, disowning his previous comments. "The many people who supported me know that when you make a mistake what you need to do is say you're sorry."

Akin said no party leaders have called him and asked for him to drop out.

"This was a very very serious error," Akin said.

Akin said no party leaders have called him and asked for him to drop out.

It this is true, McConnell, Cornyn, and DeMint need to correct this today and make it clear that Akin has to step aside immediately.

According to the Washington Post - "Akin, who won his primary two weeks ago with the help of ad spending from national Democrats who thought he would be the weakest GOP nominee, nonetheless starts the race as the favorite.

The issue is what he said about his belief that women have the ability to "shut down" getting pregnant from a rape - legitimate or not.

Huckabee, who endorsed this maroon, true to form, softballed Akin the whole way.

What an embarassment to the Tea Party. They have to disavow and dump this clown.

“What is selfish is Romney and his pitiful supports piling on Akin and making it harder, if not impossible, for him to win.

Romney and his ilk are a cancer.”

I won’t debate whether Romney and his ilk are a cancer, but it’s pretty clear that right now Akin is Ebola; highly contagious and 100% fatal. As another poster pointed out, the hypocrisy of the leftist media in giving Biden a pass while destroying Akin isn’t fair. But it is what it is. Supporting Akin only gives you Ebola, too.

Akin may be totally correct about the rate of rape-related pregnancies being low based on the details I posted here. But he's never going to recover from this gaffe because the enemedia will not allow it.

There will be wall-to-wall replays of the quote. There will be endless late night talk show jokes. And he will be dead weight not only on races up and down the ticket in Missouri, but nationwide.

He needs to resign now. If he continues to refuse, then the Missouri GOP should put their weight either behind the Constitution Party or Libertarian Party candidate, whichever seems most reasonable.

Paging Missouri GOP leaders! Please pick up the white phone in the lobby. You have a call.

Can't hang this one on Romney. It's an Akin foot personally implanted in an Akin mouth. No assist was necessary.

The reason it resonates is because the media will grind it deep into the conciousness of the voters from now until election day. Day in, day out, relentlessly. The media is not on our side. The rules for donks are different than those for Republicans. I lived in Virginia when Senator Allen let fly his strange little “Macaca” comment, and I watched the media use it to turn him from a popular incumbent with a heathy lead into a simpering, serial-apologizing former senator. But Akin’s comment is much, much worse. It’s PR Kryptonite. The media will burn him and anyone near him to ash with it.

Not only has he shot himself in the foot politically but his ability to raise further campaign contributions will dry up. McCaskill will outspend him into political oblivion. This guy needs to be sat down by the Mo Republican Party today and be told that not only does he not have the support of Dems but that he is about to be pasted by Republican candidates nationally who do not want to share his fatal self inflicted wound.

It’s not clear what he’s thinking. I assumed he meant women who claimed to be raped to get an abortion, but really weren’t. But do women do that anymore? He should get a little more education on the subject...AND....stop talking about it.

Can the Missouri GOP force him to quit? Or are we at the mercy of him quitting?

No, it resonates because he seems to think the female body can magically repel pregnancy if its a ‘legitimate rape’. He sounds like an idiot. I know this is a shock, but for many, the whole concept of conservatism is based upon intelligence. An idiot, holding the correct position on abortion is not deserving of our vote.
Anyone who wants to be a standard bearer should exhibit signs of intelligence. This goober ain’t it.

Force Akin out and you split the part at a time where it needs to be unified. For better or worse, Akin is the nominee. All we can hope is that he weathers this one and does not make too many more similar mistakes going forward. A lot to hope for, I know, but it is what it is.

This isn’t about being weak. This is about winning a Senate seat that should be won. This idiot has blown everything. And every GOP candidate is going to be asked if he/she agrees with Akin.
