Akin Statement on “Jaco Report” Interview

St. Louis – Congressman Todd Akin just released the following statement regarding his interview on the “Jaco Report” broadcast this morning in St. Louis:

“As a member of Congress, I believe that working to protect the most vulnerable in our society is one of my most important responsibilities, and that includes protecting both the unborn and victims of sexual assault. In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it’s clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year. Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.

“I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue. But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action. I also recognize that there are those who, like my opponent, support abortion and I understand I may not have their support in this election.

“But I also believe that this election is about a wide-range of very important issues, starting with the economy and the type of country we will be leaving our children and grandchildren. We’ve had 42 straight months of unacceptably high unemployment, trillion dollar deficits, and Democratic leaders in Washington who are focused on growing government, instead of jobs. That is my primary focus in this campaign and while there are those who want to distract from that, knowing they cannot defend the Democrats’ failed economic record of the last four years, that will continue to be my focus in the months ahead.”

Somebody had to do it.

Johnson had the guts to be the one.

the word legitimate absolutely bowled me over. There might be an illegitimate claim of rape but there’s no way you can you the word legitimate to describe it. He’s a moron and needs to step aside. I don’t live there but i think i would not vote that race if i did.

Hmmm.....dim’s manage to use comments such as these as resume enhancers. I agree with the suggestion to have Steeleman replace Achin’.

If Akin doesn’t quit, then he’s going to be destroyed by that sound bite like George Allen was.

We need that seat, and Akin needs to check his own ego for the sake of the country.

We’re all seeing now why McCaskill put up a million dollars of her own money to purchase ads backing him.

McCaskill has stated that Akin should stay in the race, which is the best evidence yet that Akin should drop out.

We as a party shouldn’t suffer fools lightly...let the Democrats corner the market on that.

Akin takes the morally correct and courageous stance, and now Repubs are running around like scared little bunnies... the so-called “pro-choice” cabal loves to talk about “rape and incest”, and continues to hammer away with this canard... it was time someone pushed back. Maybe Akin’s words were a little clumsy, but the main point is, do we want to protect innocent life or not? Let’s not be sidetracked by the Dem’s overheated reaction. Voters want strong candidates who take a stand...

The donks get away with the things they say because they have a powerful team working overtime to repair their image, namely the entire MSM. The same team will be spending every single news cycle trying to nationalize Akin's comment. If Akin stays in the race they WILL succeeed.

It doesn't matter if he was right or wrong, mispoken or misunderstood or mistaken. He needs to cash in his chips and leave the table ASAP for the good of the country.

"So what begins?"

Ron Johnson is a Republican from Wisconsin. A Tea Party guy. He has called for Akin to step aside. He is the first of many Republicans who will do so, I think. And so begins another root-canal. All so unnecessary...

Ditto...Akin’s remarks are beyond the pale and cannot be explained away, no matter how much he tries. Claire McCaskill is probably the most unpopular incumbent senator in the country. By remaining in the race, Akin virtually guarantees her another term.

It’s time for some elder statesmen from the Missouri GOP (Kit Bond, Jim Talent and Roy Blount) to pay Akin a visit and tell him its time to go.

Saw that right after I posted :)

Whether we like it or not Akin’s comment has been nationalized. The first two Senators to call for him to leave? One in a close race in MA and the other the Senior Senator from WI where we also expect to have a close race.

A terrible, terrible mistake.
