A Historic Return For U.S. Marines To Colt Sidearms
The Hartford Courant ^ | August 19, 2012 | MATTHEW STURDEVANT

WEST HARTFORD — — The newest Colt .45-caliber pistol is touted for its durability and design.

It is tested to make sure it can be dropped in water, covered in mud, immersed in sand or ice or left in a dust storm — and still be able to get off a round when you pull the trigger.

"Virtually, it's indestructible," said Casimir Pawlowski, who works in international sales and technical sevices for Colt Defense LLC. "You can drive over these things with a Humvee and they're still gonna work. It's like a brick that shoots bullets."

If the female MPs had problems with getting a grip on a .45, you have to wonder what they did with the M9 Berettas? I've got normal hands and I do not like the fat grip of the Beretta. On the other hand, I have a Para-Ordnance P13.45 (aluminum frame) that carries 13+1 of .45 ACP, is only 1/8-inch thicker in the grip, and weighs the same as my M1911A1 with 7+1.

If the M1911A1 or M9 is too much for small hands, then a .38 revolver ought to do. I do have serious problems with the wimpy M41 FMJ Ball rounds that are issued for the .38 though. Stoppers they are not.

No it does not. The 45, which I also qualified on, was actually a Model M1911 45 caliber pistol. It used a .45 acp (Automatic Colt Pistol) round. This is a specific weapon and round. A pistol can be an automatic, semi-automatic, revolver or single shot.

So post a link to that full-auto Colt pistol that the Automatic Colt Pistol (ACP)round chambered in. If you can't why didn't Colt call it the .45 Semi-Automatic Colt Pistol(SACP)?

I guess you are thrilled.

I am happy that the weapon they are providing is proper for the purposes of the military - KILL THE ENEMY!

Now, if you would like to discuss the fissures, discontent and strategic failures that Obama has wrought upon the US military, which will linger long after this fool is out of office, then I would be more than happy to participate.

No, I was not joking. That's news to me. I don't know if there is some sort of definitive source for firearm nomenclature, but I'd need to see something to back that up.

Back in the day every one called semi-auto pistols "automatics", I've been shooting since I was 10 years old and am now 70, I consider my self a definitive source on arms and ammo nomenclature, as do many, many other old FReepers. Automatic was the normal term since the invention of semi-auto pistols and shotguns.

When it comes to rifles however, the terms are usually broken down into semi-auto and automatic is used for full auto.

Never said there was a full auto 45 by Colt. The M1911 is a autoloading pistol, it is not a automatic pistol. An automatic pistol would allow you to pull the trigger and it would fire until it was out of ammo or until you released the trigger.

Schtenkin, H&K VP70, Beretta 93R are all fully automatic, but also designated as “machine-pistols”

There are a few full auto pistols out there. The Glock 18C is one, the Beretta 93R is another. I think that some of the old Mauser broomhandle pistols could fire full auto and I’ve heard of other pistols that can fire select fire like the 18C and 93R can.

The Beretta 93R is the basis of the pistol used in the Robocop movies.

More recent than I would have thought. Guns and Ammo changed their style guide to use semi-auto exclusively, and to drop the term automatic for pistols unless they were full auto, in 1994.

Hate to tell you but in the old days the term Automatic meant it auto lodes and cocks the weapon. If they were talking about full auto it was deemed a machine pistol.

Military service in the 80 never said the 45 was an automatic, that was reserved for the true auto weapons.

The .357 is a superb round.

I will stand by my .45 Colt, the original "issue" caliber.

300 grain hollow points at 1200feet/sec. with a muzzle energy of right around 1200.

That usually gets the job done.

Not for the faint of heart, or the original Colts, Ruger blackhawk is the revolver of choice.

I can assure you that this was not the case in 1982 when I was first instructed. At the time, the navy had automatics and revolvers in official use. I believe the other services had abandoned revolvers at this time.

The M1911 is a autoloading pistol, it is not a automatic pistol.

Then why is the cartridge that was designed for it called .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol)?

I'll tell you why. Because Melas posts were correct. Self loading shotguns and pistols were known as automatics.

How about my .454 Casul? Granted, that isn’t a carry gun.

Definitely prefer the arched mainspring housing, but the standard hammer and no beaver tail....the blood did flow!

These lines are etched in memory, and imprinted on the body (strong side iwb).

Can’t say the rail is such a smokin’ hot idea either. Prefer training with a flashlight in the off hand more options.

Gotta know that is going to be a nice 1911 to shoot.

Just made the switch to M&P (another American made tool) and am enjoying it immensly.

Looking forward to this model from Colt hitting the civ market.

And a full-auto normal-sized .45 would be just silly.

Unless your goal was a ventilated ceiling.

The reason the SEALs switched to Sig Sauers was they wore out their Beretta M9 pistols in about three to four years. The Beretta was never designed to fire 8,000 rounds per year, every year, that SEAL operators do. The Beretta's aluminum frames could not take the pounding of the hot 9mm loads the SEALs use.

Also, SEALs can use the H&K USP in .45 ACP. This pistol is called the Mk 23 Mod 0 and comes with a quick attach-detach suppressor. It is, however, larger and heavier than the Sigs.
