No wonder Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wanted to run against Rep. Todd Akin, even investing in his GOP primary victory two weeks ago by spending $2 million on ads that described him as “too conservative.’’ Missouri Republicans saw that as a plus, just as she’d hoped. But after his Sunday comment that “legitimate rape” rarely leads to pregnancy, even some in the GOP are calling for him to step aside.
The Republican lawmaker was trying to explain why he opposes abortion in cases of rape, but instead marched straight into the tar pits, where he will hopefully serve as a warning to future candidates that the reproductive info gleaned at summer camp may not hold up that well in TV interviews half a century hence.
Rape as a result of sex by force “is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

That is fine, just bury your head in the sand and pretend, I’m worried about results of this election, not a more important one in my lifetime and here Akin has handed not only McCaskil a golden club with which to beat him over the head with, but also he has given it to the Dems and MSM nationally.
If Akin is the best we can do to carry our message forward, then its going to be a long 4 years coming up.
And by the way, answer the question: Why did McCaskill support Akin in the primary?
Yeh -- he's doing better than ever and the companies that dropped him are faltering.
What the hell does this mean?
I'll tell you what I think he means:
There is physiological evidence that traumatic rape (which is what Akin meant when he said "legitimate rape") causes a woman's reproductive hormonal system to be suppressed.
Because of the hormonal disruption, a victim of a real rape is unlikely to ovulate. Ergo, no child will be conceived.
If a rape victim has just ovulated a day or two before a rape, it is possible that conception will take place. However I believe it is this is, in fact, very rare.
Complicating this whole scenario of course is the problem that a lot of claimed "rapes" aren't really traumatic rapes. I think the common concept of a traumatic rape is when a woman is violently attacked by a stranger and forced to have intercourse.
But let's be real, we all know that some women will cry "rape" when they merely regret having drunk too much alcohol and consented to the sex (and I'm a woman, so I'm allowed to say that -- I guess Rep Akin isn't).
The point is any politician stupid enough to use “legitimate” and “rape” together doesn’t deserve to be elected, no matter what party they are from. And trying to suggest that a woman’s body magically rejects a child conceived of rape, is even dumber.
He has to go. Bottom line.

It means that Akin is an ignoramus who needs to be drop-kicked out of the party before he does any more damage than he has already. He may have already ruined the GOP hopes of taking the Senate even if he does have an attack of sanity and drop out.

Not the point, it will dominate the news for far too long and Akin will become the poster boy for the GOP war on women.
And to follow your logic, you are predicting that this will make Akin a more successful politician?
It’s too late. Akin has years of solid conservative representation of Missourians. He will make a fine Senator. The Democrats cannot win on the issues and they’ve learned Obama’s lesson well. Either get your opponent disqualified or get the opponents voters fighting each other that you can coast to a win.
While feel free to offer your opinion, don’t take it badly if we ignore you if you are not a Missourian or have recently signed up to FreeRepublic.
These are just one man’s (Akin’s) opinion on one subject and it is being blown way out of proportion to the rest of his actions in his life and his voting record.
Here we are ready to throw one man under the bus for a few words and give a man (Obama) control of the the senate who has been intent on destroying the last beacon of freedom in the world. You must choose.
Go have your panic attacks somewhere else.
While Akin's backers may be arguing that since this happened in August before most people pay attention to elections, this also gives Missouri Republicans time to pressure him to drop out of the race and replace him with someone who isn't an embarrassment. National party leaders ought to step in here too and insist on his quick exit. The alternative is to simply sit back and watch while McCaskill pulls victory from the jaws of defeat with Akin's assistance.

Only if you call 5% conception rate, which sounds not that different from consensual sex, rare. Face it, Akin stepped in it with that part of his statement, and made a medically ridiculous claim.

What matters to me is truth, objective truth not PC truth, by that measure his comments do not seem all that outlandish to me.

Got some actual facts om your side, or are you just winging it?
You could “believe” invisible purple storks prevent “legitimate rape” pregnancy, but that wouldn’t make it true.

And a politician that doesn’t have a solid and defensible message about this hot button issue has no business being in politics. Never give the MSM the bullet to shoot you with.

You are right, I had forgotten that incident and it is a preview for what is going to happen with Akin.
