“Legitimate rape” became a Twitter trending topic in the U.S. this afternoon after liberal blog Talking Points Memo posted a video of Rep. Todd Akin claiming that victims of “legitimate rape” are unlikely to become pregnant.

My mother has always believed this. She says she did a paper on it back when she was in college. Something about the stress of the rape preventing conception from taking place. I’ve never researched it myself, but I always thought it sounded like it made sense. In light of that, I definitely can’t condemn this guy for saying this. Guess you’d classify me as an idiot then...

He obviously trying to say that if it is a real rape and not a case of someone accusing someone of Rape when they were willing accomplishes, and then changed their mind or felt spiteful.
His premise is pretty lame though- For sure. He seems to be saying that a woman’s emotional state at the time of sex has a bearing on if she gets pregnant or not.
But I think that people here are trying to act like this is something it is not. You are acting like people from DU. Use your brains a little.

Just from my own experience, that segment of a putative target audience is probably not interested in any sort of prolonged, rational argument of any kind in the first place, so no - I don't think it will work with them. Which is probably why he just took the simple route and stated that he misspoke.
