The Obama campaign is asking supporters to sign a letter to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney release “just five years of tax returns.”
In an email to the BarackObama.com list, campaign manager Jim Messina noted the letter he sent Friday morning to Romney’s campaign manager, vowing to get off Romney’s back about the returns if the documents were produced. The Romney camp brushed off Messina’s move.
Now Messina has converted his letter into an online petition of sorts.
“According to the one full year of returns he has released, Romney paid 13.9% in taxes on his income. Thursday, he said he went back and looked, and has never paid less than 13% over the last ten years. Now we’re asking him to put his money where his mouth is,” Messina wrote.
“It is absolutely relevant for us to ask how much a presidential candidate paid in taxes, if he sheltered his money or tried to get out of paying taxes at all, why he started — and continues to own — a corporation offshore in Bermuda, why he keeps his finances offshore in the Cayman Islands, and why he opened a Swiss bank account,” he continued.
In addition to being invited to sign the petition, supporters were reminded in a P.S. to open their wallets: “Election Day is closer than you think — make a donation to fund this campaign in the time we have left.”

Actually, I think he’s been careful to say he was a Constructional Law ‘instructor’. His team has used the word professor, but on the one or two times I’ve seen this come up and he answered....he said instructor. He knows he never got to professor status. He was simply pulling in a pay-check to cover the bills.
Whether he pays 13 percent or 1.3 percent it’s still more than the combined sum of General Electric and General Motors 2011 tax bill.
Yet, Obutthole won’t even release his REAL birth certificate, college records, etc.
This is a case of “The pot calling the kettle black” - er, well, I don’t mean any racial undertones.

Yep - just like he did when he got sealed divorce records opened....the problem this time is that a reporter would have to be super careful because if Romney pushes back, they could end up charged with an actual crime. It will be interesting to see who is the media would be willing to go that far to help Bambi - Chris Matthews, perhaps?

Agreed but that’s why he can’t leak the info, but this knowledge emboldens him to demand the returns be released. It’s not the fact that there’s illegal activity but more likely that Romney’s made large amounts of money and paid substantial taxes but at a rate below that of a suburban school teacher. That will allow Obama to demonize Romney with some irrelevant but embarassing financial facts.
Petitions mean nothing to Obama. Did we ever get a PHOTOGRAPH of his birth certificate?
Obama is making Romney's unreleased tax returns a message to neutralize him on taxes and spending and as a general distraction from the economy, This is no surprise to me,
Romney was hoping that adding Ryan would help against this natural theme against him.
Romney and CO have decided that NOT returning fire on the disclosure issue is in their best interest for the election, You can ask them their reason, They won't mention Obama records once.
You see John Sununu and Giuliani on the shows as Romney spokesman? It's painful to watch.

I cant even imagine what might be the reason for not releasing 2011 tax return. can’t be as bad as anything thats come out of the Obama administration.

I am sure there is some juicy stuff in there for Obama to use, otherwise Romney would have come out long ago. The longer he waits the worse it would be to release them.
Not knowing what is in them I cant advise him to release them, but he sure gets points for being unprepared. He was hoping the Ryan announcement would get the media away from the subject
maybe he plans to release them after the convention and leave harry r. with egg on his face.
