Joe Paterno had to be prodded by his family to read the grand jury report regarding Jerry Sandusky and did not understand some of its graphic terminology, according to a new book.
The book, Paterno by Joe Posnanski, was purchased Friday by the Associated Press in advance of its release next week.
In the book, Posnanski describes a scene at Paterno's home, two days after Sandusky had been charged with child sex abuse last November. Paterno's family and a close adviser were trying to explain to the Penn State coach that there was a growing sentiment Paterno must have known for years about the accusations against Sandusky.
The book quotes Paterno as shouting "I'm not omniscient!"
The book also indicates Paterno didn't comprehend all the terms in the report, asking his son what sodomy meant.
According to the book, later that night Paterno's son, Scott, told his mother that she should brace herself for the possibility that Joe could be fired.
Sue Paterno responded, "Scotty, that will kill him."
Paterno was fired by school trustees two days later, on Nov. 9. He died in January at age 85 of cancer.
Sandusky, Paterno's longtime defensive coordinator, is jailed and awaiting sentencing after being convicted in June on 45 criminal counts involving 10 boys.

If you read pgs 66 -- 79 of what happened after the shower incident in 2001, the AD Curley told Sandusky that no more kids were to be brought there, and Sandusky's charity TSM were also notified of the same. Heaven and earth were shaken. They contacted the university's legal counsel and called the Chief of the University Police to pull Sandusky's 1998 incident on file.
The Department of Public Welfare was supposed to be notified by Curley -- and Dr. Raykovitz of TSM. It was especially his responsibility by virtue of state law and his contacts in CYS and DPW. But no one is holding him accountable. Why???
Ultimately Sandusky was found not guilty of that particular shower incident.
Here is the account of what happened in 1998 when law enforcement and state/county welfare agencies and the District Attorney and licensed child psychologists were all involved in investigating Sandusky. Who was there left to report it to:

Total BS. Paterno was an English major out of Brown University.
Don't even try to tell me he didn't know what it means. I might agree that he couldn't believe an old friend like Sandusky could do that, but I ain't buying that he didn't know what it means or that some 'old men' are sick enough to do that.
Joe didn't grow up in Mayberry. He was from freaking Brooklyn.
What was permitted to happen at PSU was horrible and I wish those involved to get the max in sentencing. That does not absolve some of you of your emotionally addled judgements and assumptions. Shame on you too.
I suggest it is possible for someone not to know the fine points of sodomy, and still do the wrong thing.
No, I am not part of the Paterno family, but I did grow up in central PA, and can state for a fact that you would have to explain exactly how a man can be raped by another. I am a survivor of childhood molestation and know the dilemma much more than I would wish on someone else.
My heart goes out to the victims, for it is a lifetime sentence.

...so I guess it must have never happened, right?...you are aware, as many people, including myself, have pointed out, that he was not found ‘innocent’, he was acquitted of that particular charge because the prosecution could not prove its charge...nothing about that aquittal says one word about his innocence...I see you PSU fans are all reading the same talking points, a guy I know claims that if Curley and Schultz are acquitted, then that means there was no coverup, because there was no crime committed, and that all the sanctions haave to be removed...I asked him if he thought OJ was guilty of killing Nicole and Goldman, and he said yes...I reminded him OJ was acquitted, and that by his logic, no crime had been committed, and those two must still be alive; he flipped me off and went on his way...
