it also infers that those you named in your post—Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, Rick Perry and Paul Ryan— have no principles, since they are supporting this ticket as the country’s only means of survival.

There is another possible take. That is pride.
The restatement is that pride in principle always comes in first. The pride trumps reason to the point it can not be transcended without total loss of face.
The inability to overcome pride in belief transcends the threat, the major genuine threat to being conservative and of America that is Obama.

Let me make a prediction. After Romney is rejected in November, we will have another election in 2016 and that, too, will be the most important election in your lifetime. Let's hope that you can find a suitable and worthy candidate to vote for in 2016.
