Santa Fe believes the children are its future, and as such, its leaders say they are listening very seriously to a group of students who are urging the city to ban plastic bags in grocery stores and other places that use them. The kids have solid reasoning as one fifth-grader said, "Stop using plastic bags and help everybody in the universe including people who are going to be alive in the future."

I use plastic bags to clean up my dog's poop. Does this mean that "Everybody in the Universe" would rather step in it?

Yea, out of the mouths of babes have they perfected folly.
Stupid people shouldn’t be allowed to breed. Look at the mess they have put us in.

Santa Fe: home of the eternally clueless, lost in the wilds of northern New Mexico... (Used to be Taos, but they all moved south, like the locust...)
Immediately upon reading the headline the image of a little green man clawing away at a plastic bag stuck over its head popped into my mind :D
Skulls full of mush
poor Marvin the Martian.
So will they be suing paperbags and burlap to carry their hooch and drugs from now on?
Most experts agree that a ban on plastic won’t help “everybody in th universe”, as the effect on prisoners of the Dark Lord of Rigel 7 will be neglible at best.

“you’re just an accident of time and chance and aren’t anything more special than a dog or a pig or a rat, and your only ‘salvation’ you can seek is in how much you care for the errf”.
Why not a request to require everyone in the “student group” to secure plastic bags over their heads to “help the universe”.
At least it might eventually raise the intelligence level of the area.
Well, that’s a new one. AMERICA IS KILLING THE WHOLE DAMN UNIVERSE.
Paper bags have been stigmatized into oblivion. Canvas/reusable bags cultivate weird diseases.
Sorry, kids, living has impact. Living better has more impact. No-impact life isn’t.
Since it’s a 5th grader, I’ll give them a pass. Otherwise, I’d be paging Captain Hyperbole.
Everyone in the universe includes those on Uranus.
In the universe? Give me a break. You can't fix stupid, unless you use a gun. BTW, Austin TX is doing the same thing. The city is also spending several thousands of dollars to educate the sheeple why this is a good idea.
When you’ve had children, you pick up on the fact that they don’t come up with original ideas very often unless it’s to get something they want from their siblings, or against their parents wishes.
When it comes to matters like this, Children are mirrors, and paintings. They are not natural statesmen.
If they are protesting the use of plastic bags, some brain dead moron adult has been harping on the subject.
I consider adults who do this sort of thing to kids to be child abusers.
There are countless good uses for plastic bags. Just one, to put a sandwich in it to keep fresh and insects and dirt off, is a health related one. Another, to bring home food, so that trees don’t have to be cut down to make a paper bag.
I have a great idea for folks like this.
You’re in a room, and there’s $3,000 dollars in silver coins on the floor. You can only carry all of it out in a paper or plastic bag.
What do you do?
a. use the paper bag causing the slaughter of defenseless trees
b. use the plastic bag and condemn humanity to certain destruction
c. leave the $3 thousand dollars worth of silver there for the next person who can make better decisions
