Polls closed in Connecticut at 8 p.m. as voters cast ballots in the state's primary elections Tuesday.
The Associated Press delcared Linda McMahon the winner of the GOP Senate race over Chris Shays about 40 minutes after the polls closed.
Elections officials said turnout appears to be on track to hit 25 percent to 30 percent as Republicans and Democrats picked their candidates for the November general election.
Hotly contested races for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives dominate Tuesday's ballots.
Many polling places saw a slow stream of voters.
Secretary of the State's office spokesman Av Harris said turnout was 7 to 8 percent in the morning and no major problems were reported.

Please tell me how is this wrasslin whore, epitome of what is wrong in the culture, going to do as a politician?
Did I just answer my own question?
She got her a$$ handed to her last time because she is a RINO. Why not nominate a conservative. This election is one of opportunity for ALL elections having conservative wins and the dang Republican Party is continually picking these weak RINOs. What a lost opportunity from the President on down. Despicable.
We voted for McMahon over Shays. You get what you get in Ct.
I get the impression that CT is so far gone politically their is no hope, this is probably the best we could do. Yes, and I used to live their....
Is this the wrestler lady? Jesse Ventura in drag? Wait, he is usually in drag.
It’s my home state , but you couldn’t pay me enough to live there again .
If Glenn Beck could do this to Richard Blumenthal, she must be a real moron to lose to him.

I thought Blumenthal was going to cry.
If the ‘rat running against her is well known and relatively popular (like Blumenthal was in 2010), Linda is going to get suplexed (figuretively speaking). But then, Vinnie Mac has plenty of pocket change to spend on Linda’s political hobby.
Good job, Linda!!! Got a good shot at picking up the open senate seat. shucks from the polling numbers, it looks like even CT will be tight for Obama. Looks to me that the Obamabots are going to have to spend some time and money in Connecticut, come November.
Now....Florida is a different story. Connie Mack has won the GOP Senate primary and will handily defeat Bill Nelson this coming November. The GOP total vote is some 300,000 votes mor then the Democrat promary vote. Alan West destroyed his opponent and will easily win his new seat in November over “dirt bag” Democrat Pay Murphy, a insult to all American-Irishmen. Predition, Obama will lose Florida, big time!!!
That was rather crass!...and stupid!!!!
My home state is New York. NY,NY to be exact. My favorite state is SC but sometimes life has a way corralling you in a geographic location you’d rather not be in. Such is life.
Congratulations to Linda McMahon
McMahon has tons of money and can make this race very competative, even in blue CT. She might win in this lousy economy, the Dems will have to spend money to help Murphy.
It’s the Northeast. We have to hold our noses alot when voting.
You worry about our degrading culture?
Well money talks.
Congrats to Linda.
“You worry about our degrading culture?”
Why not. The peddlers of degeneracy are becoming politicians... as conservatives! What’s next? Larry Flynt?
Chris Murphy was one of Pelosi's many lap dogs in the House, and needs to be sent packin' to find that real non-public job he's never held.
Chris Shays blew it when he said he wouldn’t vote for Linda McMahon in the general and made himself look petulant. It’s quite an accomplishment to make McMahon look like a stateswoman. I have heard she’s improved as a candidate since 2010, but she’ll still lose to Congressman Christopher Murphy.
Republicans have a chance at winning Murphy’s Congrsesional district, but that relies on a Lowell Weicker-style liberal winning the nomination. I don’t envy our Nutmeg state peers.
