Introduced in the 1970s, the compound triclosan has become an increasingly popular ingredient in many antibacterial soaps and other personal-care items, such as deodorants and mouthwashes. However, as the chemicals popularity continues to grow, a recent report has raised concerns about some frightening risks that triclosan could pose to public health.
A new study published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" has revealed that exposure to triclosan is linked with muscle function impairments in humans and mice, as well as slowing the swimming of fish. By reducing contractions in both cardiac and skeletal muscles, the chemical has the potential to contribute to heart disease and heart failure.
(Added bold emphasis is mine...)
The researchers from the University of California, Davis, and the University of Colorado decided to examine the possible effects of triclosan due to recent literature raising health concerns about the chemical, as well as substantial increases in its production.

FYI
I grew up in dirt. You need some germs to keep your body alert and always on the lookout. Why do for it what it can very well do for itself.
I see these soaps that say, “Kills 99.99% of germs” and think, “What’s the point?” We gotta be perfectionists in everything? Only a surgeon needs to be that clean.
I use soap so I don’t get dirt on my clean, white shirt. I’m not trying to kill anything. Just take off the dirt.
Agreed. Why is it only newer products and chemicals that are singled out for so much scrutiny? This reminds me of the nitrate scare in the 70s. I worked with a lady who stopped bringing baloney sandwiches for lunch because she was spooked by the latest chemical bad guy. I told her that the 2 packs of cigs she smoked every day were going to get her long before the nitrates would.
Most of what passes for science these days is bogus. Any clown who can get a grant (and they are usually provided by government that loves a chance to scare people and issue more regulations) can put together a slip-shod study.
If all these chemicals are so toxic, why are we living longer than ever? It’s nonsense.
Phisohex mentioned on Seinfeld in the David Putty germophobe episode.
Where is mah monah? Sue, sue, sue, oh lawdy I been hurt by them kyamkuls! Seriously, what do you expect from poisons found in everyday items, including “food”?
PhisoHex was awesome.
I used to have a real acne problem and that cleared it up 98%
I was p*ssed when the friggin’ govt took it off the market.
It’s good soap. I used it almost my whole career in the military and still do. Easy to pack, multi-purpose body soap. Small nalgene bottle will last for a year. Only takes a few drops. I still use it. Almond and or peppermint is what we buy.
Enjoy the trip !
***Breaking***
There is a new study just published in PNAS linking the exposure of “good old lye soap” with muscle function impairments which in turn increase muscle contractions and has the potential to contribute to MPD (multiple posting dysfunction).
The BEST stuff ever!!! I like the peppermint the most and been using it (backpacking, camping, and daily use) for at least 22 or 23 years. They’d better never find something toxic in there :0)
I forget..is dry milk good or bad for you?
Otherwise, can someone tell me why there are 80 and 90 year olds all over the place. They didn’t eat organic. They lived in houses with lead paint and lead pipes. They drink drank fresh cow milk. They breathed secondhand smoke. They cooked with lard. They drove around in death traps. Ate transfats...Many of them didn’t attend college. Some didn’t even graduate from Highschool...ect ect...???
Oh we’d be dead already the way we use it past and present.....:o)
Hope yer well... Stay safe
Are the triclosan producers owned by the viagra producers??? Inquiring minds want to know!!
Used that stuff for sports eqpt. from the school. Available at Walmart, too.
Thanks for the link.
Nothing I use is on that list. I like Safeguard, which contains triclocarban, but that’s not indicated as dangerous.
ping to you
TMI!
I’ve had a heck of a time finding lye soap. I found some Octagon soap over a month ago at Big Lots, but it sold out quickly. Wal-mart carries Naptha soap in the laundry aisle.
