London 2012 Olympics close with spectacular ceremony
BBC News ^ | 13th August 2012 | BBC News

'The London 2012 Olympics have ended with a spectacular musical closing ceremony and the official handover to the next host city, Rio de Janeiro.

The three-hour show featured some of the biggest names of British pop from decades past, including the Spice Girls, George Michael and Elbow. Games chief Lord Coe said: "When our time came - Britain, we did it right."

The official Games flag was handed to the mayor of Rio before the flame at the Olympic Stadium was extinguished.

President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, who declared the Games of the 30th Olympiad closed just before midnight, said: "We will never forget the smiles, the kindness and the support of the wonderful volunteers, the much-needed heroes of these Games. "You, the spectators and the public, provided the soundtrack for these Games. "Your enthusiastic cheers energised its competitors and brought a festive spirit to every Olympic venue."

At the close of the ceremony, watched in the stadium by the 10,000 athletes and 80,000 spectators, the flame was extinguished in dramatic fashion. Each nation will receive one of the cauldron's 204 petals.

As fireworks went off above the east London stadium, the Who performed My Generation and the venue became a sea of red, white and blue confetti.

The finale, which began with Big Ben chiming, paid tribute to UK music, fashion and culture.'

I just hope to qualify for Europe. If they could just avoid the usual bad start, they could challenge.

OH! Mrs. Slocombe and her pussies (CATS!) and Mr. Peacock. My introduction to British comedy; a bit too young for Monty Python.

Now, “mind the pedestrian.”

I will grant you that there are a couple of older programmes shown over here wich are decent but did you ever see rising damp?

Course it could never be shown anymore on here due to PC, there is another called on the busses.

Maybe you tube has them if you have the time, I think you might like them.
One of my foster ads used to love benny Hill, I never cared much for it.

O.K...I had logged off for the night I just came back here to see if I was having delusions or if NBC really cut off the end. That is just crazy.

It was a pretty lame closing ceremony but it still hacked me off.

Exactly...
One of the worst songs of all the fantastic Brit songs they could use...
A complete waste of opportunity.
“Imagine there’s no religion, too.”
Wonder how ole John Lennon’s dealing with THAT these days, hmmmm?

So we got Pet Shop Boys, George (public toilet) Micheals, Jesse J (?), Liam (without Noel) Gallagher (really dated song) and Fat Boy Slim?
Somebody was doing dope on this one...

I agree. What happened to the Who? Heard there was a big finale with all the performers, but not on NBC.

Brian May did a fantastic job, but who was that gal singing? Could have found someone better. Of course, Freddy Mercury got the crowd fired up even from the grave.

Pink Floyd tribute was done good.

As others have pointed out, where was Def Leppard or Led Zeppelin? Annie Lennox and then those rappers doing Bee Gees were chosen instead?

Lots of other crap mixed in. I was not impressed with what should have been a fantastic show.

Don’t forget diving and untold hours of volleyball. Worst Olympics ever. Thank God Obama led the Chicago Olympics, what a graft machine that would have been.

Pray for America

The dancing nuns is a reference to the musical ‘Spamalot’ by Eric Idle, which is a musical based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Its not an attack on the Catholic Church.

So you don't think the original fellating nuns in Holy Grail was an attack on the Catholic Church? This is just a reference to a reference, so it's different?

Somehow there is a pathetic quality to all of this. England is circling the drain and this seems to be it’s grand finale and the really weird thing is the Brits seem to be ok with it. Sad.

Britain puts on a successful games; comes 3rd or 4th in the medal table (depending on how you measure it); there's no terrorist attack as predicted by lots of freepers and yet it's all evidence to freepers of how Britain's circling the drain.

Ok, found Rising Damp on youtube. Nothing for On The Buses. Netflix has been putting out more and more of these, so maybe they will show up there some time.
