Is a gun like a virus, a car, tobacco or alcohol? Yes say public health experts, who in the wake of recent mass shootings are calling for a fresh look at gun violence as a social disease.
What we need, they say, is a public health approach to the problem, like the highway safety measures, product changes and driving laws that slashed deaths from car crashes decades ago, even as the number of vehicles on the road rose.
.............Dr. David Satcher tried to make gun violence a public health issue when he became CDC director in 1993. Four years later, laws that allow the carrying of concealed weapons drew attention when two women were shot at an Indianapolis restaurant after a patron's gun fell out of his pocket and accidentally fired. Ironically, the victims were health educators in town for an American Public Health Association convention.
That same year, Hargarten won a federal grant to establish the nation's first Firearm Injury Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
"Unlike almost all other consumer products, there is no national product safety oversight of firearms," he wrote in the Wisconsin Medical Journal.
That's just one aspect of a public health approach. Other elements:.......
......Disease patterns, observing how a problem spreads. Gun ownership a precursor to gun violence can spread "much like an infectious disease circulates," said Daniel Webster, a health policy expert and co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research in Baltimore.....

...... Two overarching themes run through Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General--- the importance of information, policies and activities that reduce and eventually eliminate the cruel and unfair stigma attached to mental illness; and the importance of a solid research base for every mental health and mental illness intervention.
....."Of his disappointments Satcher speaks of supporting research showing that guns were most dangerous to the people who owned them than they were in terms of protection. We tried to get Congress to pass gun control legislation, but that was used against me when I was being considered for Surgeon General, he said."...

Hello backdoor gun control.
It’s for your own good, you know.
Government run “health care” is an open door to control everything we do or consume.
Who cares what a Provider (a state owned-"doctor") says under duress.
This will open the back door to the same type of unfounded regulations as the EPA has used against the coal industry.
who in the wake of recent mass shootings are calling for a fresh look at gun violence as a social disease.
gun violence?
This is difference from other violence?
How?
Is a human being more violated or more dead if you shoot them, then if you beat a person to death with a baseball bat?
IDIOTS. The problem is PEOPLE not the gun or the bat.....
“Unlike almost all other consumer products, there is no national product safety oversight of firearms,” he wrote in the Wisconsin Medical Journal.
And, “all other consumer products” should be treated the same; there should be NO Government sponsored “national product safety oversight” on those, either.
Product safety should be a function of free market dynamics, not government intrusion into the private sector. There is no Constitutional authority for such intrusion.
Notice the almost imperceptible, seamless way gun violence and gun ownership are blended to be virtually the same thing. Also missing is any allowance for justifiable gun violence as in self protection.
Unwarranted gun violence may be a social disease; gun ownership and self-protection are not.
This new law waspassed by Democrat house and senate and signed by a Democrat governor. I don’t like Romney care, but this law was NOT part of it.
These are the same “Doctors” who declared Homosexuality was not a disease.
Fug them, and their stupid liberal ideas
This is exactly why you should never have to answer a doctor’s question as to whether you have guns or not.
“There oughtta be a law” is being replaced by “There oughtta be a disease”...
The new road to totalitariansm without all those pesky constitutional and legislative potholes...
It’s for the CHILRUN, after all...
If mere ownership of guns caused gun violence, then Wisconsin would have massacres weekley similar to what happened at the Sikh temple. Thousands or hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites have multiple firearms. My part of the state has a large contingent of hunters and gun owners many of whom have multiple firearms. It has one of the lowest crime rates in the country. And a few murders we’ve had recently were the work of criminal gangs. If you were going choose a person most likely to go on shooting rampage, you might pick someone, like Page, who’d lost his job, his girlfriend, and was a member of a hate group. Target those people...not law-abiding citizens.
All my doctors and dentists, including my personal physician, were/are hunters i.e. gun owners.
” like Page, whod lost his job, his girlfriend, and was a member of a hate group. Target those people...not law-abiding citizens. “
Ummmmm...
“Lost job”, “Lost Girlfriend”, “Member of a ‘hate group’” - last I checked, none of these is against any law...
Or does your definition of ‘non-law-abiding’ include ‘lifestyles/life events/life choices you don’t approve of’???
By making it a disease, it is out of the hands of the legislature and in the hands of bureaucrats who can edit the definitions as required. And they are not banning guns - simply limiting or denying care if you own one. Exercising your right results in a denial of care, but not active round-ups and jail time. It’s a softer kind of fascism.
