With the choice of devout Catholic Paul Ryan as his running mate, Mitt Romney, a Mormon, has arguably crafted the most religiously unique ticket in presidential history. Both religions have interesting precedent in presidential politics, however, with varying degrees of success.
John F. Kennedy was famously the first and only Catholic to be elected president. Less than two months before the 1960 election, JFK addressed the Greater Houston Ministerial Association in a hope to allay fears that the pope would use him as a conduit into American politics.
Mitt Romney's father, George, also a Mormon, was a serious Republican candidate for president in 1968. Most political observers believe he didn't get far enough in the process to have his Mormon faith fully examined or questioned. Perhaps facing a more determined press than in '68, Mitt's Mormonism was questioned in his first run for president. He, like JFK, felt the need to address his faith publicly and did so in December 2007.

The Catholics, all in all, are not very conservative. Even their Bishops tend to be progressives and agitate for leftist projects. That’s why even Santorum was pro-Union and partial for moderation, at least before this last election cycle. The number of conservative Catholics is very low, and Catholics aren’t that big of a majority in the country either, especially when you consider that many are just Catholics in name only and don’t participate in their own Church services.
But that would bring out the tons of FREEPERs who keep preaching, "Keep religion out of it."
Ya know...all those THOUSANDS of FREEPERs who applied this standard to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright threads & posts...and to Obama's alleged closet Muslim status...
Oh wait.
There weren't thousands of those kinds of comments applied to Rev. Wright or Obama the supposed current Muslim.
That standard apparently is only religiously hypocritically applied to the sacred cow of Mormonism.
Never mind.
**************************
Oh...for additional evidence of this type of religious hypocrisy, see the "non-reaction" of conservatives to: Remember when Romney said he wouldnt put a Muslim in the cabinet? He made his Mormonism relevant -- and when the original info ran in the Christian Science Monitor Nov. 27, 2007: A Muslim belongs in the Cabinet: Muslims are uniquely qualified to help deter Islamist threats ... when he told the CSM: " based on the numbers of American Muslims [as a percentage] in our population, I cannot see that a cabinet position would be justified.
(Yeah...like the "Mormon numbers"...being 1.7% of the population...would keep Lds out of the Cabinet or the White House...)
Romney's a hypocrite on this; Lds are hypocrites on this; and so are his supporters...
Why is Ryan's Catholicism suddenly "relevant" when we've been told countless times that Romney's Mormonism is "irrelevant?" ???
When I walk past a crazy man sitting at a street corner, I typically toss a dollar into his hat.... and I walk away.
Here’s your dollar.
You are a person of great worth to our Lord, just like Mitt is and all Mormons.
No sarcasm at all in that sentiment.
Since Christians are known for their love, I have to ask : are you a Christian?
>>The number of conservative Catholics is very low<<
Yeah, right. Maybe where you are.
There is every flavor in every religion but take a good look at the Pro-life movement. Those Catholics aren’t libs.
Catholics came out in droves to fight the HHS mandate. Just because you don’t see it on the news doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
I think Salvation has a list of Bishops who came out against Obama LONG before he personally affected Catholics.
As for, Catholics aren’t that big of a majority, according to the census our of
[In thousands (175,440 represents 175,440,000).
Adult population,
228,182
Christian
173,402
Catholic
57,199
So where are all the people clamoring to have this “hate” posted in the Religion Forum.
And Mitt Romney's corporation tells us that Catholics are whores of Babylon.
According to the CIA world fact book, Catholics make up 23 percent of the population, while Protestants make up a little more than fifty percent. Of that 23 percent, you can expect at least half of them to not be practicing. Michael Voris did a really good program detailing just how many Catholic organizations are connected to Soros and/or are progressive, pushing an agenda. It was the Catholic leadership in the first place which hailed the health bill until they realized it went against their pro-life position.
“No but JFK was high on pain killers and XxX anything on two legs his entire adult life. Had the press not protected JFK, he would have never been a senator much less President. The same is true of Obama.”

God is so merciful...makes me happy, I have this list of sins I battle.
We both agree don’t we, how important regular...frequent from the heart repentance and confession of our sins to God are for the life of our soul? To add, believe it or not, some day...Heaven says “soon”, all Christians will believe in Confession to a priest (John 20:23), according to private revelation.
Padre Pio bore the stigmata for fifty years, read his words after the assassination of President Kennedy.
“Jackie didn’t tell me that, so I don’t know,” says Archbishop Hannan, adding, however, that there were the deep concerns about the political climate in Texas. “He had been warned about being in Dallas by a number of top Democrats, especially Adlai Stevenson,” recalls the archbishop. “He and others had warned him that they had heard a lot of real bad talk and that it was dangerous for him to go there. Jackie knew when she married him that there would be the possibility of him being assassinated,”
Could this alleged foreboding — these rumors — have led the Catholic president to have secretly requested Confession? Was this really something Kennedy might have done? “It sure could have been,” says Archbishop Hannan. “It sure could have been, because he was told that he was in danger.”
According to the archbishop (Hannan), Kennedy participated in the sacraments throughout his presidency, attending Mass except when travel made it difficult. “When he was outside the city, sometimes he would go to Mass, sometimes he wouldn’t,” notes Hannan.
...It seems that in the zillions of words written in the past four decades, something of this would have come out. If it did happen, perhaps it was Monsignor Wolf, already elderly back in 1963, who took the secret to his grave. Likely? Unlikely? There is one last mystery. In Italy, the famous mystic Padre Pio, since canonized, was said to have broken down and wept at news of the assassination. When a fellow priest, Padre Aurelio, equally distressed, asked him to pray for the dead president’s salvation, Padre Pio reportedly replied: “It’s not necessary. HE’S ALREADY IN PARADISE.”

>>Michael Voris did a really good program <<
Michael Voris is a self-promoting conspiracy theorist who is right about 1/2 the time. He is here in Detroit with me. Most of us (good conservative Catholics) know he hates the Bishops and he never gives credit to the good ones while he belittles the less desirable.
In PERSONALLY speaking with him, he has a one track mind that cannot be changed with facts that do not agree with his theory.
Biden is only a CINO since he supports abortion, same-sex marriage, contraception......want me to go on?
Michael Voris is the one Catholic who tempts me to be Catholic myself. I’ve never seen any error in any of his research or arguments. Considering he has Bishops who also support him, though many hate him, I can’t say that he “hates” the Bishops, the Pope and the Catholic Church when he is a greater champion of it than most Catholics. A shame he is wasted on your church though.
And that PDF does not seem to contradict the CIA world fact book.
>> A shame he is wasted on your church though.<<
Please, you can HAVE him.
We have two historically Catholic, uber-conservative churches in our area, Neither will have him in. He is so into himself, it’s silly.
And RC, I’ve never seen you say anything nice about Catholics, so “tempting” you to become Catholic is about as likely as “tempting” me to eat onions. No way, no how.
