Mitt Romney has had a tough couple of weeks on the campaign trail -- and it shows in the latest Fox News poll. After a barrage of campaign ads, negative news coverage of his overseas trip and ongoing talk about his tax returns, Romneys favorable rating and standing in the trial ballot have declined. As a result, President Obama has opened his biggest lead since Romney became the presumptive Republican nominee.
The president would take 49 percent of the vote compared to Romney's 40 percent in a head-to-head matchup if the election were held today, the poll found. Last month, Obama had a four percentage-point edge of 45 percent to 41 percent. This marks the second time this year the president has had a lead outside the polls margin of sampling error.
Obamas advantage comes largely from increased support among independents, who now pick him over Romney by 11 percentage points. Some 30 percent of independents are undecided. Last month, Obama had a four-point edge among independents, while Romney had the advantage from April through early June.
There was also an uptick in support for Obama among women, blacks and Democrats.

Cut Kansas58 some slack - he’s probably still upset that so many of his establishment Republicans (who actually like Romney) got beat in Tuesday’s Kansas primary. ;-)
They all agree with me.
Is there any rational, normal person who agrees with you? You support Obama
The difference being that I don’t see Romney as being that much different from Obama. The fact she doesn’t know the facts is disheartening. This is the same child who made me take off work and drive to Salem Va to see Sarah Palin.
Suddenly, she is a fracking idiot who thinks that Romney is a rich version of Alan Keyes.
There were lots of cheers as the conservatives won.
All of the elected Republican Conservatives in this State are supporting ROMNEY.
ALL OF THEM!
There were Romney stickers on the tables at this election night party.
Allow me to quote Bill Clinton, “I feel your pain”.
Romney is up by 15 in Indiana.
And registered as opposed to likely, which favors the left.
This poll is in the bag.
So, what you're saying is that now is the time to finally send her on that vacation to Europe for a tour of England, Spain and the low countries.
Let us just take One (1) year, and some samples.

Romney - the One and the Only "Magic RINO(TM)":
"Obama was born in the United States"
It’s amazing. Are you actually complaining that Romeny might pick a conservative to be a runningmate? Lieberman is retiring, would you prefer Romney pick him? From what I hear, Ryan is going to be the pick.
Paul Ryan got 68% of the vote in his district 2010, it is a safe seat.
Brett, the mesomorph, low-IQ jerk, who blew the jury verdict in the O.J. Simpson civil trial, back when. Surely, I'm not the only one here who remembers that embarrassing moment.
thats cute kid...
But your boy Wee Willie doesnt like nasty guns...
Lets use powder puffs...one has face powder the other has itching powder...
Thats more in sissy girl Willie’s line...
BTW I would grab the fully loaded gun and start shooting your gang and take some with me...
I think the people who are falling for it, want to believe it.
Yet Real Clear Politics lists Indiana as “leaning Romney”. The amount of junk polling is astounding, as if Obama had a chance to steal SC and GA as well.
Considering the amount of naysayers in this thread, I’d say it’s effective at demoralizing people.
Registered voters? And at the same period of time as this poll?
Two conservatives candidates (both of whom won on Tuesday) told me essentially the same thing. They'll both be listed as supporting Romney but both feel that they have no choice, otherwise, they won't get cooperation from the state party that they need in their fall campaigns. That's the way the game works. One knows from experience since he angered the party establishment and suffered the consequences - his primary opponent was coaxed into the race by party regulars to silence this "trouble-maker". Each has told me that he will not personally vote for Romney - as one told me - the party bosses can't watch me vote.
In your response to Diogenesis, you listed a bunch of conservatives who have endorsed Romney. What would you expect? All of the these people have an interest in maintaining political viability. They can't get too far off the reservation.
South Carolina could well be in play. Consider steady changes in demographics. Consider the SC GOP at war with itself. Consider a third party candidate that could gather one to two percent of the vote. Consider that some conservatives will sit out the election. Finally throw in some of the religous right who will not vote for a Mormon. The end result is that the Ascended One might pull out a victory by plurality. I expect Romney to win SC, but you have to realize that SC is no longer our father's south.
