SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California's electricity grid operator issued a state-wide alert on Thursday warning users to try and curb power usage in coming days because a fast-approaching, major heat wave may place undue strain on an already taxed network this week.
The exceptionally rare power warning -- its first in years -- from the most populous state in the country comes as California struggles to meet surging electricity demand.
The California Independent System Operation, or CAISO, a not-for-profit corporation charged with operating the majority of the state's high-voltage grid, issued a "flex" alert urging consumers to reduce power usage especially in the afternoons, when air-conditioning dramatically ramps up demand.
CAISO is bracing for the heat wave and struggling to compensate for the loss of the 2,150 Megawatt (MW) San Onofre nuclear power plant.

Peak electricity demand for Thursday through Sunday ranges from 43,000 MW to 47,125 MW, CAISO said. The state is capable of producing up to 58,600 MW, according to CAISO.
The all-time peak demand was 50,270 MW, which occurred on July 24, 2006.

That total potential capacity seems a little high to me.. we'll see soon enough.
It's a Bay ARea Spare the Air day today so try and reduce emissions, OK? ;-)
We had Jimmy Peanut telling us to put on a sweater.
Will Moonbeam tell us to put on a Speedo? Silly leftards.
I assume for the sake of the planet that this plant WILL be replaced by a 2,150 Megawatt field of wind turbines?
If you voter ID card has a “D” on it your power should be cut off everyday from noon to 4. It’s their earthly obligation.
In fact, our entire economy should be voter ID based.

Wait until those lauded “smart meters” start turning peoples’ appliances off.
These people are idiots. It’s summer time. Funny how that happens every year isn’t it? The state knows it but never plans for it.
.
Mark for later.
This is the same high pressure system that just devastated Oklahoma and has now moved west. You Kalifornians need to make sure your generators are in good working order and you have plenty of fuel. You will need a bug out plan in case you have to evacuate due to wildfires. Make sure you have a bug out bag containing your important papers and several changes of clothing. And don’t trust your safe to protect your guns from fire. Oh, I forgot, Kalifornians aren’t permitted to own firearms.
Electricity: The high priest of false security.
The rich/poor aspects of this stuff always amuses me.
The poor are told to turn off their sole 10,000btu window unit, and their TV, while the rich run their whole house systems, massive aquariums, a household of electronics in every room, the maids and staff running every appliance, indoor and out during the daytime work hours, the pool systems, the recirculating pumps on their hot water systems, high quality professional lighting in their homes.
I go to homes that use the resources of a small apartment complex.
Here we go again...
I no longer have firearms, lost them all in a tragic wildfire that burned our house down some years back.
But thanks for the other advice. We try to stay prepared...but no thanks to the rats in Sacramento, AB32, CARB and Schwarsenkennedy, we've had a lot of our power supplies cut off because they're "dirty and non-renewable".
Apparently there are some efforts to make home fuel cell electrical generators that use natural gas. All well and good if your area uses natural gas.
I personally would like to see a propane powered a/c unit that could cool a house. For 4-5 months you can live without electricity in the southwest, but without a/c you have a major problem.
Bet they wish they had that 2200 MWs from San Onofre NGS...
Worse, it plans to make it happen. Government, from the President on down, is doing its best to wean citizens off electricity. CA works overtime to make sure there's not enough juice to run a/c's in hot weather. No new power plants, no new gas pipelines, etc., etc. Keeping people cool and comfortable is bad for "the environment," ya' know.
CA offers incentives for rich homeowners with AC, pools and hot tubs to install solar electric panels. No such luck for the small users.
The real irony is that they use conservative talk show hosts to pimp the incentives in ads.
We in the high desert are exempt. It’s the only bright spot in the suckiness of living here. That and the clear skies.
On the bright side, when that high speed train gets to running those California folks can all go out and line up alongside the tracks on hot days and catch a breeze as that train goes highballing by.
