Really? I've never heard of that... I served 21 years in the Marines.

Upon further review... there’s no right answer. All I found was “US law and military tradition indicate that “half-mast” is generally reserved to usage aboard a ship, where flags are typically flown from masts.”

Not exactly definitive. As Captain Barbosa would say, “the code is more what you’d call “guidelines” than actual rules.”

Okay, I did find something.

4USC Chap 7, Position and Manner of Display, refers repeatedly to half staff. There is no mention at all in the code of half mast.

So, I stand by my original comment. Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things. :-)
