WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Monday that mass killings like the shooting rampage at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin were occurring with "too much regularity" and should prompt soul searching by all Americans, but he stopped short of calling for new gun-control laws.
"All of us are heart-broken by what happened," Obama told reporters at the White House a day after a gunman opened fire on Sikh worshippers preparing for religious services, killing six before he was shot dead by a police officer.
But when asked whether he would push for further gun-control measures in the wake of the shootings, Obama said only that he wanted to bring together leaders at all levels of American society to examine ways to curb gun violence.
That echoed his pledge last month in a speech in New Orleans to work broadly to "arrive at a consensus" on the contentious issue after a deadly Colorado shooting spree highlighted the problem in an election year.
But like his earlier comments, Obama offered no timetable or specifics for such discussions and did not call outright for tighter gun control laws.
Talk of reining in America's gun culture is considered politically risky for Obama, who is locked in a tight race against Republican challenger Mitt Romney for November election.
"All of us recognize that these kinds of terrible, tragic events are happening with too much regularity for us not to do some soul searching to examine additional ways that we can reduce violence," Obama said at an Oval Office ceremony to sign an unrelated bill.

As a military veteran, and senior citizen, I -refuse- to engage in what you call so cheaply, as “soul searching”.
I was around during the Kennedy years. I know what the ‘Cold War’ was all about, and that it has not gone away, but has been sadly misshapened, misidentified, and propagandized, to the point that the average American citizen could swallow having you, a Communist, actually run for office, and succeed.
I came through the following years of Martin Luther King, hearing all the hate talk against ‘whitey’, while continuing my education in Connecticut. Since you have been elected, you have continued, by outright example, of perpetuating that hate talk and walk. Starting with ‘you make too much money’, ( a black vocal charge since the ‘60’s), and continuing through, as you ‘shine on’ investigations into voter intimidations by black groups, and to date, naming the military (which is by majority, white), military veterans, and anyone who ‘clings to their guns and their bibles’, as homegrown terrorists. This proves to me, that YOU, Mr. President, are the racist.
I was in the military, during Jimmy Carter’s disastrous years as a President. Under your leadership and direction, you make litigations against military members and their opportunity to vote. Why? I’m quite sure you know the answer to that, don’t you?
I have lived through boom years and bust, real jobs and temporary work, but this is the worst I have ever seen this nation’s economy, and it’s on YOUR watch! Not Bush’s, nor FDR’s, but your’s!

It has already issued an executive order giving Amnesty to 1 million illegals by passing the Dream Act Amnesty by decree. It will give Amnesty to the rest as well.
In my city, I see it overrun by foreign immigrants, Muslims, Africans, Haitians, Mexicans, etc. We have to stop immigration as immigrants vote for socialism (democrats)and don't have American values. It does not look like America here. Obama is letting all these immigrants in. What is happening to the U.S.A.?
