Time's up for climate change deniers
New Jersey Star-Ledger ^ | August 5, 2012 | by Star-Ledger Editorial Board

Forget the Olympics. Want to watch records being broken? Turn on the weather report.

Everywhere you look, Mother Nature is grumpy. Even skeptics are starting to come around. While no hurricane or heat wave is direct proof of warming, the worldwide pattern of record-breaking weather extremes most certainly is.

Accepting climate change as fact isn’t an inconsequential choice. Extremes in heat and cold are buckling highways, railroads and runways. Floods routinely overwhelm drains and streams. Sea levels could rise a foot by 2050, threatening coastlines worldwide. Adapting our infrastructure to new weather realities requires a committed population.

Retrofits will take generations. The cost is incalculable. Imagine the cost of ignoring it.

Climate ignorance is a self-inflicted wound. Citizens can no longer sit on the sidelines and pretend it’s a political position.

If the people who control the decisions and the purse strings continue to deny climate change, whether for politics or ignorance, a lot of folks will be left under water.

It’s called desperation.

Don’t you know that dams=bad. Just ask any paddler or anyone that doesn’t understand basic physics. Meaning 95% of the population. I do dam remediation projects from time to time btw.

Funny thing is that the two dams in Ann Arbor Michigan are going to be retrofitted to produce electricity, its the other 3000+ dams in Michigan that need to come out.

Electricity for me and none for thee.

I have often said that if one lets a liberal talk long enough, you can see exactly what they think, not what they want you to think they think.

The passage you highlighted is evidence in point. Excellent post.

“Sounds like someone we all know and love.”

Yup. The usual Progressive pap artists who further the presumption that all Progressives are brilliant while all those Christians in flyover country are bible-thumping, gun-loving, knuckle-dragging morons.

As one of the fine, intellectual, brilliant Senators said, that you mentioned, that his colleagues on the other side must be made aware that our government has three branches; the Senate, the House and the Presidency. (Absolutely brilliant, along with Mr. Obama’s proclamation that there are now 57 states in the U.S..)

IMHO

Best Regards

[Screed] Adapting our infrastructure to new weather realities requires a committed population.

Translation: Dragoon the citizen body into liberalism, flog the slow movers to reeducation camps, and shoot the refractory.

Same old Commie crap from 110 years ago.

Whoever turned off the Palmer raids did fantastic damage to America. We need to find out who that was, dig up his bones, hang them, then burn them, then bury the ashes under a freeway.

The only truth to the coincidence of “climate change” and current global weather patterns is the natural occasion of a period when climate cycles are in the process of nearing a point of “changing directions”; causing the greatest natural disturbance in weather patterns.

Global weather has been experiencing a gradual warming trend (with fits and starts) since the last “little ice age”.

If the rate of “extreme weather” means anything at this point, it might quite naturally mean we are on the cusp of a natural and major “cooling” trend.

Paleotemperature curves show what has happened in each of the preceding interglacial epochs, and we are in one now, which will end in about 800-1800 years (my own correlation).

Generally, each interglacial starts with a bang, with a sharp rise in global annual temperatures, achieving a maximum, or Climatic Optimum, about 1000-3000 years in. The curves are modulated curves, i.e. there are several cyclicities at work, and their influences are additive (positive or negative values), and they are rank-ordered by profundity.

The temperature break at the end of the Pliocene Epoch was the first-order change. The glacials and interglacials are the second order changes. Third-, fourth-, and fifth-order variations turn the interglacial temperature curves into cockscombs which roach, or curve, from the Climatic Optimum (maximal temps) gradually downward toward the end of the interglacial 6000-12,000 years later, ending with a temperature crash and the onset of full-glacial conditions.

The new evidence from tree rings shows that the net background change, i.e. trend, in global temperatures since the time of the Romans has been downward (comprehensively refuting the "Hockey Stick" thesis), in agreement with the major trend in previous interglacials.

Enjoy it while it lasts. By the 38th century, we're history.

One last point: Warmer = wetter, and abundant harvests. Cooler = drier weather, and crop failure. The AGW crowd hasn't figured that out yet, or they'd be building their "We need totalitarian Communism NOW!" message on the Russo-Danish astrophysicists' predictions of low sunspot activity, cooler global temperatures, and all that that entails (as during the Dalton and Maunder lows).

Oh! So now I know why the New Jersey Turnpike is buckling and collapsing! It’s global warming - not corruptocrats and the union who steal money which is designated for infrastructure. What a relief!

I’m hoping the “warmists” don’t settle on “teen girls wearing revealing clothing” as a cause for AGW. Anything but that. ;-)

Yeah someone posted on here a report detailing how we could produce enough electricity for several million homes by retrofitting existing dams to produce power. Also the Idaho national lab has a report out about how we could double our electrical output from hydro which currently represents about 6% of the national total. Imagine if we had spent solyndra et. al. money on this. Yep there would be jobs and actual super cheap renewable power. But nope. We need to bail out GM for the third time. jeez.

NO ONE has ever “denied” the fact that there is climate change. In fact, “Climate Change” is normal, always has been. Once, thousands of years ago, there was an ice sheet a mile thick covering most of the Midwest and Eastern United States. Where is it now? It melted.

Climate change. What has been denied is that the incredibly tiny amount of CO2 that Man has added to the atmosphere is responsible for some sort of climatic catastrophe that never happens, even when Al Gore predicts it. So, to all you Chicken Littles out there, MORON this later.

Skepticism is a benchmark of real science.
OK.
One more time...

There is a huge difference between the discussion of weather and climate.
If the editorial board of the Star-Ledger can't spare to time to educate themselves and understand that difference, I don't have the time to read their crap.

You're setting yourself up if you ask for this. I'm sure that if mathematical proof is wanting, they can always find a mathematician or two to whip it up.

If that mathematician is related in any way with East Anglia, prepare the popcorn for hours of free laughter and entertainment.

Mathematics refuses to succumb to data manipulation and selective deletions, or accidental loss of supporting data, or outrageously claiming (Waaaaaaah!) that you can't reveal your analytical methods, because you'll just criticise it!

climate change as fact

Climate change is a fact. It happens all of the time, in cycles. Usually over hundreds of years.

If the Star-Ledger Editorial Board thinks that man is causing climate change, then the Editorial Board should stick to journalism, because they obviously don't have a clue regarding science.

I'll give the Board a free clue: climate change is caused mostly by the sun. You know that bright thing in the sky that rises in the east and sets in the west.

> Manhhattan would still be under a mile of ice

Directly where I now sit there was an ice sheet a mile and a half thick, only 15,000 years. Not too much traffic back then, it must have been the Mammoth farts that saved us. Come to think of the volume of that big ice sheet, they would have to have been mammoth Mammoth farts.

BTW, the comments at the site are 90% in rebuttal to the Goebbels who wrote the article.
