NPRs Terry Gross was effusive in tribute to leftist author Gore Vidal on Fridays Fresh Air, airing chunks of previous interviews she'd had with Vidal. She began: In Vidal's New York Times obituary, Charles McGrath described him as, quote, 'the elegant, acerbic, all-around man of letters who presided with a certain relish over what he declared to be the end of American civilization,' end quote.
And: As Reed Johnson wrote in the Washington Post, quote: Vidal's revisionist outlook struck some critics as brilliant and others as almost gleefully perverse, unquote. From a 1988 interview, Gross let Vidal unleash a long attack on how America is a "very primitive country" with its "peasant superstitions" of Christianity:

Vidal should have been sentenced to live in Iran. Then get back to me on how bad America is.
That old queen can go rot in the hot place.
I remember seeing one of his books after 9/11 in the book store. “Bush regime” this. “Bush regime” that. Blah, blah, blah.

He’s dead....what a shame.....pass the toast!!!!
Vidal consistently made the point that there is no such thing as a "homosexual" and there is no such thing as a "heterosexual". For him, everyone was everything, and while an activity could be classified one way or another, people could not be categorized in a static way.
It struck me that this completely destroyed the "born that way" concept. Basically, you CHOOSE to engage in homosexual activity. You don't have to. You don't have a homosexual nature: no one does. It's simply a chosen lifestyle.
I really don't think Vidal had the ability to see how devastating his own viewpoint was. You cannot champion special rights for homosexuals if homosexuals are completely in that category by choice.
Actually the fact that the homosexual community allows in bisexuals, transexuals, and transgendered into the tent essentially does the same thing even though nobody really bothers to consider it.
Though I’ve been thinking lately as to how stupid the notion of rights for the transgendered are.
I mean really, let’s think about this- if someone thinks they are a chicken we don’t graft fake wings and a beak on them then tell them it OK to go scratching out in the yard. We throw them in the loony bin for their inability to accept reality. How it the inability to accept the gender you are born with any different?
I wonder how many of his worshipers realize that.
Vidal won’t be missing this broadcast ‘cause I’m sure hell has an NPR affiliate.
Vidal’s revisionist outlook struck some critics as brilliant.
Struck some critics as brilliant, puke alert! send them to an arab country!
Another thankless cretan who has made his money off the American people and then sh##s on thier doorstep.
I’m sick of these elitist arrogant nobodys who would remain nobodys if it werent for the generousity of the American people who made a nobody into a somebody only to be a turncoat. Sh## on them and on thier graves!!!
I'd have no problem whatsoever if one of my neighbors wanted to do this instead of throwing him in the loony bin. It would be entertaining and of course free eggs are always a plus!
Terry Gross - one of those "you can't make up the name any better" instances...
I’ll give Vidal one thing though. He didn’t “TALK” about leaving the country like those asshats Baldwin and O’Donnell He put his money where is mouth is and left. Yeah he was a sottering old queen who didn’t know shit from shinola but at least he walked his talk!
William Buckley Jr. had the best retort for vidal in a debate in 1968,”Now listen, you queer. Stop calling me a crypto-Nazi, or I’ll sock you in the goddamn face and you’ll stay plastered.”
“the elegant, acerbic, all-around man of letters who presided with a certain relish over what he declared to be the end of American civilization,”
I’m old enough to remember the fouled mouthed, pressy queen fawned over by the liberal, very left-leaning, press.
He was nasty, arrogant and not partcularly funny until he had his a** handed to him by Bill Buckley!
Expect to see more of these paeans in the a$$ in the coming months, as we're told that Vidal wasn't inspired by the Muses; he inspired THEM.
