New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and state officials are pushing initiatives aimed at encouraging new mothers to breastfeed their babies, drawing criticism from some parents who say officials are interfering with their health choices.
State health commissioners announced on Tuesday that letters highlighting the importance of breastfeeding were being sent to hospitals, reminding them of regulations limiting unnecessary formula feedings for breastfed newborns.
The state initiative coincides with Bloomberg's call for hospitals to lock away their baby formula and have nurses encourage new mothers to breastfeed.

“Whos thirsty?”
You got something to offer?
Not good enough. The "costs to the public health system" can be an excuse for you to march everybody else around to whatever tune you are playing. That's one reason why Obamaocare is so scary.
If we had an actual free-market system, in which Mommy Dearest bore the costs of unnecessarily feeding her kid formula, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
arrogantsob, meet Drango. Drango, meet arrogantsob.
When public service campaigns just don't satisfy our itch to control others, we must band together to make them BEHAVE!
See #43.
Yes, but she’ll have to put up with some obnoxious nurse lecturing her about the ills of formula every damned time she asks for a bottle. Hospitals can be miserable enough places without such crap.
It’s simple ~ not all breasts lactate. If you prohibit the use of formula you will murder the babies of the women whose breasts do not lactate.
Still, he will keep a good number of very large breasts around for his personal use.
True, no guns. Just an obnoxious lecture every time Mom, for whatever reason, asks for a bottle. Hopefully, Mom won’t put up with that crap.
You don't believe it, don't pay your taxes ~ just stop filing. See how long it is until they send someone after you ~ with a gun.
On paper, yes, she'll get a lecture re: formula. In practice, the first time she asks, some nurse will ask her to sign some form saying that the nurse talked to her about formula, and that's the last she'll hear about it.
Besides, as things stand now, plenty of obnoxious nurses lecture new mothers about the benefits of formula (by the time she left the hospital, my wife was ready to smack the next nurse who told her how much easier a bottle would be).
No one is “prohibiting” anything.
“If we had an actual free-market system, in which Mommy Dearest bore the costs of unnecessarily feeding her kid formula, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Whaaa?
Even without the Job Destruction Act health costs have been basically socialized particularly in states like New York. This is a very important factor in the health costs taxpayers must pay for the ignorant. I’m all for reducing them.
What do you think Laws do?
I see a rise in midwife activity.
Well, I do believe the concept of American liberty is flying right over your head. I hear Europe is nice this time of year.
Next Gloomberg will outlaw quickdraw bras, then bras in general.
Oh, please. As though most nurses are Nurse Rachets.
In New York City particularly many of the new mothers know nothing about nursing their babies and will profit from having additional knowledge about how it is done. Most will be grateful for the assistance.
RIGHT THERE IT IS ~ top of the article too.
See the term "Limiting unnecessary formula feedings" ~ that's a tad subjective ~ "Unnecessary" ~ is authoritarian.
This goes over the line ~ and even for New York where fascism is tolerated a lot more than elsewhere, it's a bit much else nobody would complain.
Yes, this is an order to the hospitals to see to it they subject infants to abusive treatment created by a mind numbed knee jerk leftwingtard apparatchik in the Mayor's office.
It's like the prosecutions that used to ensue in "failure to thrive" cases. That was the government's answer to the problems of CF and Celiac. People have had their babies taken from them for those problems, and then placed in foster care where they died.
There's a reason the breast feeding programs and their advocates are not trusted either.
Oh, I am sure we will be seeing headlines such as “Mother Shot For Refusing to Breastfeed” any day now.
There is no loss of liberty involved here for anyone. Lots of silliness though.
