The White House is expected to OK federal standards in the next few weeks that will nearly double vehicle gas mileage for vehicles by 2025, as automotive dealers warn the changes could slam the recovering retail car industry because they will come with sticker prices that will keep buyers off their lots.
The recommendations call for fleet wide gas mileage of 54.4 miles a gallon by 2015 -- essentially the average gas mileage for cars, trucks, vans and all other vehicles in a model year.
The Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration submitted their proposed 2017-2025 fuel-efficiency recommendations in mid-July to the administrations Office of Management and Budget.
Dealers support fuel economy increases, Bailey Wood, a National Automobile Dealers Association spokesman told FoxNews.com Saturday. But if dealers cannot put vehicles on the road, we cannot reduce greenhouse gases or our dependence of foreign oil.

It’s taken over 100 years to get fleet gas mileage to 30 now they think they can get to 54 mpg in the next 3 years?
Somebody is smoking dope.
They don’t want you to have your own car.
The ultimate freedom is being able to jump in your own conveyance and go wherever you want, whenever you want.
You cannot control people who are that free.
Gasoline at $5+ per gallon, new cars starting at $35,000, “safety” and environmental gadgetry that is prohibitively expensive to repair, road regulations that force older cars off the road, exorbitant insurance rates, and the dwindling buying power of the Middle Class will force more people into the cities to use “public transportation”, making them ever more dependent upon the totalitarian collectivist state.
If you mandated a car be made out of very light-weight metals and mandated that 3-cylinder light-turbo cars be the norm....then 54 mpg is very possible. Moving the national speed limit to 50 mph would also help. Course, none of these are very acceptable except in California.
Whachoo tawkin bout Willis?
That's what I think too. Just like they don't want people to have the freedom to fly.
New cars are already unaffordable for many of us and another cash for clunkers program will drive us to bicycles.
Ford's Trade-In: Truck to Use Aluminum in Place of Steel
Next, they'll be writing in new rules and regulations mandating warp drive technology.
Either that's a typo and they mean "2025", or the Obamanistas have concluded it's the only way people are ever going to start buying Chevy Volts.
(Everything these idiots do hurts "their people" more than the people they are trying to "get even" with - "Cash for Clunkers" decreased the supply of used cars, and so raised used car prices. Who is most likely to want to buy a cheap, used car? The Republican demographic or the Democrat demographic?)
The Democrat car dealers thought they were okay. Dictators dictate.
All the illegals are just ahead of our times. They drive rat rods with no insurance so they can dump them and run if necessary. Sounds like the future to me! ;-)
We aren’t talking aboiut one car here. We are talking fleet mileage.
In order to make up for their SUV’s the smaller cars they sell would have to get 75 Mpg. Then they would have to be able to sell these little golf carts.
A two car family used to be a car for mom and one for dad. In the future it will be a three car family. One to drive and two for parts. ;-)
Oh, they can do it, but all the cars will have to be the size of these new Fiats I see running around town, not real cars.
That new Fiat doesn’t get near 54 MPG.
Nor does the Smart car.
* "Oh yes we can do it, but @ what cost"...( After all this is Physics)
* The "thinker" type when asked about so will are chassis be as exotic as Formula One cars for Materials? the answer was that won't even get us their.....
* One interviewee on the Frank Beckmann program (auto guy) let it slip they essentially went along with our lear deader as to not get in his cross hairs and hope to "revisit" this down the road.
Pray for a regime change...
You nailed it.
