Facing declining demand for electricity and stiff federal environmental regulations, coal plant operators are planning to retire 175 coal-fired generators, or 8.5 percent of the total coal-fired capacity in the United States, according to an analysis by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
A record-high 57 generators will shut down in 2012, representing 9 gigawatts of electrical capacity, according to EIA. In 2015, nearly 10 gigawatts of capacity from 61 coal-fired generators will be retired.
While many of those coal plants are old and relatively inefficient, the scope of this new planned shutdown is unprecedented.
“The coal-fired capacity expected to be retired over the next five years is more than four times greater than retirements performed during the preceding five-year period,” EIA noted in the analysis.

“57 generators”.. One in each of 0bama’s states? Just more proof that 0bama IS “trying”. He’s intentionally weakening America so that even the third world countries will surpass us. How’s that $2 BILLION dollar off shore oil production going in Brazil, 0bama?? Ooops, ask George Soros I guess.
It’s going to be a real hoot when people are going to need generators connected to bicycles just to charge their cell phones. However, it might be the solution to the obesity problem that the nation’s “poor” are currently suffering from.
I work on power plants in North America. This is a bad idea for the reliability of North American Power. It will drive everyone’s cost up. All of our power now is Gas Fired, Hydro, Wind, or Solar. (Not a bad thing, but no one wants coal or nuke now because of the Government)
I can’t even name a place starting a new plant right now. Check out online with the major Grid web pages and you can see some startling stats. ERCOT.COM and CAISO.COM are Texas and California, both have their total available MegaWatts vs. Total Consumption, when the values get close or match you get blackouts or rolling blackouts, or brownouts. One mistake or problem at a generation site can have a large impact on us.
Every closed plant makes those numbers getting close not only probable but almost a certainty.
And FYI Redcitizen, My Great Danes share a brain cell... The last smart Dane I had I miss so much it hurts. He was a super dog, a true GREAT Dane. If you have a smart one you are blessed!
This article is misleading. Many of the coal fired plants being taken off line are a result of political and regulatory pressure, not economics. Natural gas has mitigated the effects in some areas where it is plentiful and cheap, but natural gas plants were never designed to be main line plants. Without the natural gas plant, companies would be losing money and we would be experiencing brown outs, but they are not the cause of coal plant shut downs.
We are losing modern, low emission coal plants that burn low sulfur coal from Wyoming because the EPA has declared war on CO2. Trees and corn love CO2, its the breath of life for them and completely harmless to us. Anthony Watts blockbuster revelation of today (WUWT) destroys the global warming rationale that drove us to criminalizing CO2.

Have you seen a list of the plants to be closed? I am somewhat familiar with the plants here in GA, and would be very curious to see which ones are slated for closure.
I haven’t seen a list, but I do know of a least two relatively new low emission plants that will close because of CO2.

This means about 300 less trains (loads and empties), which as a freight train conductor means less work for me, less work for Maintenance of Way personnel, etc. This will have such a huge fallout for the working people that this administration claims to be champions of.
That should read 300 trains PER DAY.
Watch for rolling blackouts just like happened in Texas in February 2011 where Texas authorities were begging Mexico for electric power. The windmills will be idled by weather fronts and there will be no fossil fuel generators to pick up the slack during periods of peak demand. Obama’s energy policies give us the energy reliability of a third world country.

I really doubt that. It was 108 degrees today and will be about 105 or more the rest of the week.
Electric companies love hot weather as that is when they make the BIG BUCKS!
A liberal, scientist friend who fully believes in global warming told me that the damage is done; there’s no turning back and there’s no way to address the doomsday that we have set.
Personally, I think the whatever warming we’re seeing is from all the asphalt we have. It heats up the earth, even in winter.

Hopefully, all will be recommissioned in 2013 with the approval of a new president and administration.
If a Republican administration can’t re-open existing plants, what in heck might else they have a hope of accomplishing?
