Dick Cheney: Picking Sarah Palin for VP Was 'A Mistake'

Dick Cheney has some advice for Mitt Romney on choosing a running mate: Don't pick another Sarah Palin.
In his first interview since receiving a heart transplant in March, Cheney told ABC News, that John McCain's decision to pick Palin as his running mate in 2008 was "a mistake" - one that it is important from Romney not to repeat.
It's subject on which Cheney has some unique experience. He helped Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush lead their vice presidential searches and, of course, served as vice president for eight years. He's also privately offered some advice to both Romney and Beth Myers, who is leading Romney's search for a runningmate, on the process.
Cheney would not comment on what he told Romney and Myers, but he was harsh in his assessment of McCain's decision to pick Palin.
"That one," Cheney said, "I don't think was well handled."
"The test to get on that small list has to be, 'Is this person capable of being president of the United States?'"
Cheney believes Sarah Palin failed that test.
"I like Governor Palin. I've met her. I know her. She - attractive candidate. But based on her background, she'd only been governor for, what, two years. I don't think she passed that test
of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake."

im pretty sure the real mistake was W not choosing a VP who was willing to take over the reignsBINGO!Bush had a duty to his Country and his party to take a VP that could succeed him.
If Cheney's advice is so valuable, Bush could have called him on the phone to get his input.

In the beginning the GOP had the House, Senate and Presidency.
Y'all blew it *Big Time* resulting in the loss of the House and Senate eventually giving us Obama.
You now have the nerve to say Sarah was not qualified and a mistake.
Yeah right Dick, *W*, you and the GOP-E had nothing to do with it.
Elitist, a$$ covering fool!

What made Cheney, or Bush for that matter, qualified to be president.? It was being of a certain age and a natural born citizen. That makes them, and Palin, qualified. obama is not.

Dick Cheney praises Hillary Clinton
I have a sense that she is one of the more competent members of the current administration and it would be interesting to speculate about how she might perform were she to be president, he said.
Hillary Clinton, a leftist with no executive experience, is praised. Sarah Palin, mayor/governor/executive is panned - by our own side.
The GOP-e can suck it.

It wasn’t he who I tried to put into place....it was his female dog. He was too much of a fag to tell me to my face to get the heck away from him.
This happened before the election. I forget the term they used for it, but it was the media place, which happened after the debate and everyone was interviewed.
While waiting for it to start, I decided to stand in front of Fox News. Back then, Fox wasn’t what it has recently become. Sean was there, as was Romney (I do have pics, if interested).
As to your question, I can only speculate he chose Sarah to get the conservative base......which was a winning choice since most of us voted for Sarah, not McLame.
Sarah was dragging his butt over the finish line, until he opted to suspend his campaign and go vote FOR the bailout.
If I remember correctly, Sarah wanted to go to MI and the campaign would not allow her to do so. Seems as though they kept her on a VERY tight leash.

Go ahead. Continue to insult Sarah Palin. That goes a long way with me. /s The GOP is committing political suicide with their continued attacks on Sarah Palin, and they probably know it.
Every time one of them pulls something like this, they don't gain one single additional vote, but they piss off another million or so conservatives.

Liz C. has zero elected office experience!
GWB and Cheney were so unpopular, neither could campaign for the McCain/Palin ticket and he wants to blame Sarah Palin?
UNREAL!

At the top of the list is the fact that she stood up to corruption. Corrupt officials went to jail when Palin turned them in after she refused to become part of the corruption.
Is Sarah Palin the only Governor to have refused to become involved in corruption? While her high moral standards are certainly to be commended, she is not the only moral voice in elected office. Basically you're saying that she upheld her gubernatorial oath of office and did what the law required of her, which was to conduct herself legally.
Shes not only qualified, shes more qualified than anyone else by virtue of her opposition to the permanent political class.
You mean like John McCain (who Sarah said "shares her vision for America"), like Orrin Hatch, who writes and sings love songs to Teddy Kennedy? Add up the cumulative years that Hatch and McCain have been living off the taxpayers, and you come up with just shy of 65 years, and if that isn't 'permanent political class', you tell me what is?
And there is nothing in the job of president that Palin couldnt accomplish. None have ever been named because none exist.
And aside from her 'standing up to corruption', you have failed to list her exemplary accomplishments as Governor.
Try again.

I think it will be very important for Romney to pick someone with significant and proven executive experience. The real issue is whether or not the pick comes from the political elite class or not.
Easier to understand when we acknowledge that there are basically two classes of people in this country; The political elite, (and there is an uber elite within that group as well) and the rest of us. Palin was an insult to them, as are we.

The only reason I'm still a Republican is to vote tea party candidates in Louisiana Republican primaries.
Other than that, the GOP is dead to me and has been dead a long while.
