CARY, NC -- Fresh from lunch at Chick-Fil-A, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty said that officials' public objections to the Christian-owned fast food chain are "chilling."
"Now you have the police power of government intimidating and threatening people, being used to intimidate and threaten people, based on their free speech rights and their religious views," Pawlenty said Saturday of city officials' objections to president Dan Cathy's public disavowal of gay marriage. "I mean its chilling. I mean its stunning, it is jaw-dropping. And so I think strong people who see this need to stand up and say no we dont do that in the United States."
Several elected officials, including the mayor of Boston, have said that they will discourage the opening of new Chick-Fil-A franchises. Pawlenty noted said that he had sampled Chick-Fil-A's products for lunch earlier Saturday. "It was awesome," he said of the chicken strips and waffle fries he ordered.

I have no problem with people adding their voices to our side. It got downright discouraging when this whole CFA thing start where it seemed voice after voice of well known person piped up condeming them. I’ll take all the voices saying “Hey lay off them” that I can. Perhaps it will encourage more people to speak up.
Chick-Fil-a couldn’t pay for the amount of advertizing they are enjoying. The president of the company should send out a few thank you cards to the heads of the networks. Something however tells me that better manners than mine will keep that from happening.
From First Ward To Freedom Trail, No Chick-fil-A For You

To modify Lord Acton, power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely, but aldermanic power corrupts all der more manically.
Proco “Joe” Moreno is alderman of the First Ward of Chicago, and last week, in a city with an Aurora-sized body count every weekend, his priority was to take the municipal tire iron to the owners of a chain of fast-food restaurants.
“Because of this man’s ignorance,” said Alderman Moreno, “I will now be denying Chick-fil-A’s permit to open a restaurant in the First Ward.”
“This man’s ignorance”? You mean, of the City of Chicago permit process? Zoning regulations? Health and safety ordinances? No, Alderman Moreno means “this man’s ignorance” of the approved position on same-sex marriage.
“This man” is Dan Cathy, president of Chick-fil-A, and a few days earlier he had remarked that “we are very much supportive of the family the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives” which last part suggests he is as antipathetic to no-fault divorce and other heterosexual assaults on matrimony as he is to more recent novelties such as gay marriage.
But no matter. Alderman Moreno does not allege that Chick-fil-A discriminates in its hiring practices or in its customer service. Nor does he argue that business owners should not be entitled to hold opinions: The Muppets, for example, have reacted to Mr. Cathy’s observations by announcing that they’re severing all ties with Chick-fil-A.
Did you know that the Muppet Corporation has a position on gay marriage? Well, they do. But Miss Piggy and the Swedish Chef would be permitted to open a business in the First Ward of Chicago because their opinion on gay marriage happens to coincide with Alderman Moreno’s. It’s his ward, you just live in it. When it comes to lunch options, he’s the chicken supremo and don’t you forget it.
The city’s mayor, Rahm Emanuel, agrees with the alderman: Chick-fil-A does not represent “Chicago values” which is true if by “Chicago values” you mean machine politics, AIDS-conspiracy-peddling pastors and industrial-scale black youth homicide rates.
But, before he was mayor, Rahm Emanuel was President Obama’s chief of staff. Until the president’s recent “evolution,” the Obama administration held the same position on gay marriage as Chick-fil-A. Would Alderman Moreno have denied Barack Obama the right to open a chicken restaurant in the First Ward? Did Rahm Emanuel quit the Obama administration on principle? Don’t be ridiculous. Mayor Emanuel is a former ballet dancer, and when it’s politically necessary he can twirl on a dime.

Palin's speaking style only works because she is smart, committed, and confident. Most politicians don't have the brains, nor commitment, nor confidence to pull it off.
Bravo!!! You summed it up so well.
I have no problem with people adding their voices to our side.Exactly. Some on this thread seem to be saying Pawlenty's support somehow isn't good enough.
I'll tell you, I get tired of the endless demands for purity expressed by some (not all) conservatives. [Makes me think at least some of the purists aren't even conservatives at all, but moles working for the other side trying to undermine our morale.]
We're in a freaking war, people. If the guy next to you is shooting at the enemy, please don't criticize him because you don't like the color of the mud on his boots.
“How about conservative media calling the entire Obama agenda what it is: The War on Christians.”
***
It’s also a war on the Constitution and our First Amendment rights.
I wonder if these mayors are willing to say the same thing about the Boy Scouts? God bless the Boy Scouts, and Chick-Fil-A!!!! (and, of course, the pygmies in Africa)
Call it what it is: A war on Christians. This was ginned up on purpose. There is no difference between this and the two minutes of hate directed at the so-called ‘Mohammed Cartoons’. Chick Fil A was chosen specifically because they are closed on Sunday, so are obviously Christian.
“I wonder if these mayors are willing to say the same thing about the Boy Scouts? God bless the Boy Scouts, and Chick-Fil-A!!!! (and, of course, the pygmies in Africa)”
Now that would AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How about August 3 for “Boy Scout Appreciation Day” at Chick-a-fill. Boy scouts, in uniform, get to EAT FREE. And if their management won’t pay, we pay!!
Well don’t worry, the left also loves Islam, and when it gets in there will be no where for gays to hide. Or women for that matter. But hey, it all serves the radical agenda.
How about the fact most Americans agree with what the man said? And btw he didn’t even say that much. Be assured this is a full attack on Christianity.
Why do they not protest Islam? There is no more anti gay religion on Earth.
Until I see them protest the Ayatollahs who are having them whipped and executed in public, get the F away from my church that preaches love, tolerance and forgiveness for all.
(From facebook argument) that’s not tyranny.
What about the JOBS??? Chicago unemployment rate at 9.4%.. And who believes that number, I mean really!
“What about the JOBS??? Chicago unemployment rate at 9.4%.. And who believes that number, I mean really!”
Get real - the people in Chicago don’t care about jobs when it comes to their politics, and I suspect that they’re happier without jobs, since they get paid in either case.
And that is EXACTLY our problem. To be surprised by the reaction of these mayors shows just how TOTALLY INEPT our highest-level politicians are, on our side.
I see what you're saying but i think that we should in fact say these things are jaw-dropping, even when we aren't really all that surprised by them. And i imagine that is the case with Pawlenty.
Otherwise it gets no attention. If you just say "well, what do you expect from lefties?" people who don't follow politics will just shrug and think it must be no big deal then. But if you say it's "shocking! jaw-dropping! I can't believe they would do something like this!" that is more likely to get people interested and start thinking that there really is something rotten going on.
In a similar vein i get frustrated when i see a politician speaking out about what the left is doing and people here say "Captain Obvious!" Yes, it may be obvious to us political junkies, but we have to keep getting the message out to those who aren't paying much attention beyond soundbites: which is most of society it seems.
Doing things in a low-key matter-of-fact manner just doesn't work in today's culture. Nor does assuming that we don't need to keep pointing out what should be blatantly obvious to everyone.
True - except that I REALLY do think he’s jaw-dropped. Rush wouldn’t be, at all, but just about everyone else on our side are CONSTANTLY SURPRISED by where the left goes.
I grew up within a block of Mayor Daley, and knew his attitude toward “Queers”, as he referred to them often, in open meetings at his 11th Ward office.. That was when closeted Gays, could have held their diversity meetings in a phone booth..
I remembered one of the reasons the subject came up was that someone suspected that his son (Richard, who later became Mayor) was caught driving drunk in the Queer area of town, and he stressed that he was reassuring the constituents that he wasn’t a “Queer” it was only a coincidence, since he was caught drunk in the “Little Italy” neighborhood earlier that month, and nobody accused him of being Italian.. LOL
Mark Steyn hits the nail on the head once again
