Oxford University has rewritten the laws governing its strict academic dress code following concerns that they were unfair towards transgender students.
Under the new regulations, students taking exams or attending formal occasions will no longer have to wear ceremonial clothing that is specific to their gender.
It will mean men will be able to sit tests in skirts and stockings and women will have the option of wearing suits and bow ties.
The new laws, which will come into force next week, comes after a motion put forward the university's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer society (LGBTQ Soc) was passed by the student union.
Jess Pumphrey, LGBTQ Soc's executive officer, said the change will make a number of students' exam experience significantly less stressful.
She told The Oxford Student newspaper: "In future there will be no need for transgender students to cross-dress to avoid being confronted by invigilators or disciplined during their exam."

A nice way of saying that they’ve abandoned the dress code.
My question would be.....do you even have to wear clothing? I’m one of the “free-as-a-bird” types and would prefer to take all tests and exams with nothing on. Surely, they could accommodate me.
This brings back a technique that I heard about way back in high school. What they did was tell the basketball team to not use deodorant for the two days prior to their big games.
They stunk so much that the other team had to back off on defense, giving them a huge advantage.
In this case, yea, I can see dressing as drag queen during these exams...although, in England, it may not even turn heads anymore.
yech
sin
it’s sin people
this perverse obsession with sex
disgusting
Well, if they can wear kilts, not much difference.
Skirts are uncomfortable for long exams, and if a guy wants to wear one to a big test, it just proves he's nuts, although he may be lacking said anatomy.
How does wearing pants make testing “stressful”?
Just imagine a man sitting for a morality and ethics exam dressed in high heels and a skirt. If I were the instructor, it would be an automatic FAIL.
I thought the UK was proud of their ‘KILTS’...so I scottsman and a scotts transgender would be classified as what?
The one poor proud Scotish guy will now have to spend his entire time there saying “No I’m not one of them!”
Most women don’t even wear skirts anymore. They must not keep up with the fashion these days.
Don’t they call them Kilts?
Now that's hilarious.
Being naked is more natural than a desire to wear the clothing of the opposite sex.
We are born naked. Clothing is determined by culture (and trends) and social values.
There is no gene to “wear the clothing of the OTHER sex”.
Men don’t wear lace panties under a kilt.
