Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com, and his wife, MacKenzie, have agreed to donate $2.5 million to help pass a same-sex marriage referendum in Washington State, instantly becoming among the largest financial backers of gay marriage rights in the country.
With the gift, the couple have doubled the money available to the proponents of Referendum 74, which would legalize same-sex marriage in the state by affirming a law that passed the Legislature this year. Courts or lawmakers have declared gay marriage legal in six other states, but backers of such measures have never succeeded at the ballot box.
Proponents of the effort in Washington State called it a game-changing gift that gives them a fighting chance in November.
To get this from a straight, married couple sends a powerful message that marriage is seen as a fundamental question of fairness, Zach Silk, the campaign manager for Washington United for Marriage, said Thursday in an interview.

It’s his right to do what he wants with his money. I have the same right and will not ever be using amazon.com again.
Oh no! Is there any place left to shop that isn’t run by liberal, anti-Christian morons?
Thank you for this information. I have just deleted the Amazon order I was intending to submit to them today.
Yes! Chick-fil-A!
So giving server space to Wikileaks and selling books written by pedophiles wasn’t reason enough to stop shopping at amazon?
beginning to look that way. . . I wish these corporations would stay out of the culture wars. Dan Cathy of Chick-Fil-A has been denigrated by the LGBT advocates for donating to pro-traditional marriage causes, so others have the same right to view the Amazon contributions this way.
Most welcome, and good for you :-)
Probably the result of threats made by Jeff’s boyfriend-du-jour.
I have spent several thousands of dollars through Amazon for at least 5 or 6 years - maybe more. This definitely will put in a crimp on what I choose to buy in future. It’s a pity; I really liked the convenience and haven’t had a bit of trouble in all my purchases. I’ll miss them.
Will Republican Governors demand that Amazon does not do business in their state? Think not. Difference between liberty and facism.
Not anymore. We're not supporting this. We don't want our money going to trash. We'll just move things over to another seller. Books can be bought just about everywhere these days.
Amazon.com has just lost a lot of valuable customers.
This needs to go viral. I believe people will act accordingly.
I will be cancelling my Amazon Prime membership today.
Hope they are enjoying their riches here (which is only a blip on the screen) while supporting a campaign that leads others to hell. Amazon is not only godless but anti-American.
So Amazon condones Sodomy too now.
Good for you, and I think it will be noticed by many others who will act accordingly and with integrity as your family has.
Amazon has an excellent interface for shopping, and I will continue to use that - their bandwidth can help me so long as my money doesn’t help them. I just will not place an order with Amazon ever again.
There is a difference between Amazon and Chik-fil-a, although slight. Amazon’s FOUNDERS are giving the money, it’s not coming from the company itself, wherein the traditional marriage policy is that of the Chik-fil-a company AND the founder. I won’t stop shopping at Amazon, there are many employees and most likely many with views in line with mine, why punish them?
Really wish the founder of Amazon had kept his opinion to himself.
