Analysis: Why gun controls are off the agenda in America
CNN World ^ | 7-23-2012 | Jonathan Mann

What is it about Americans and guns? ...

"I can tell you that I don't think there's any other developed country in the world that has remotely the problem we have," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said after the shooting rampage in Colorado.

There are an estimated 270 million guns in the hands of civilians in the United States, making Americans the most heavily armed people in the world per capita. Yemen, ..., comes in a distant second.

From Washington to the well-stocked shelves of Walmart stores nationwide, guns are regarded in the United States as a commonplace if controversial consumer item for millions of law-abiding hunters, collectors and citizens concerned about their safety. They are also in the hands of thousands of killers too; a Washington-based anti-gun lobby says those guns shoot more than 100,000 people a year. In 2010, there were more than 30,000 deaths caused by firearms when the number of homicides, suicides and accidental deaths are tallied.

....

CNN and Gallup surveys going back years suggest that Americans are split between those who approve of current gun-control laws and respondents who would like to see them made more restrictive. Americans who'd like no controls at all are a small minority.

.....

America is not unique. Norwegians are marking the first anniversary of a shooting massacre that took the lives of 69 people at a summer camp outside of Oslo. Eight more people were that day killed by a bomb in the Norwegian capital itself. The confessed killer is awaiting the verdict of his trial.

But America seems to be the place the whole world thinks of when apparently ordinary people use guns for grotesque acts of violence. America stands alone in its historic and cultural attachment to guns. America stands armed.

The CNN and Gallop polls quoted is standard leftist agenda on how to frame the question.

Some form of gun control, (um ok, id/criminal background check.) Versus No control at all.

What would be your answer?

What is it about Americans and their guns ?

If you even have to ask this question, Mr. Mayor, (or anybody else) you have absolutely no idea about how America works.

I’d opt for zip....no controls whatsoever. Let society take care of any trash who use a gun to commit a crime. The more guns, the less crime....and that is WELL documented. There will always be bad guys with guns, and they couldn’t care less about gun controls, gun laws, gun restrictions, yada yada, ad nauseum.

Bloomberg would be much happier just giving up on America. We will never become his little toadies and think his thoughts and do his bidding.

I recommend that he move to Lagos, Nigeria. They could use his money.

Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

They (the author) say it like this is really a bad thing.

“What would be your answer?”

My answer is that gun control is an intellectual fraud. It defies logic, cannot be supported by actual facts, and the only people who are interested creating such measures are people who want to see some European nanny-state style government in the US, or worse, which makes their motives automatically un-American and their actions treasonous.

My answer. No federal gun control laws, limits or restrictions on arms or ammunition whatsoever.

The Second Amendment is clear on the matter.

Once the private ownership of crew served weapons become common, maybe we’ll eventually revisit the matter.

Why is gun control the only fundamental right to be repeatedly threatened and maligned? You do not hear anyone advocating the repeal of women’s suffrage, or wanting to reinstate slavery, why is the 2nd Amendement the exception?

Giving up my guns wouldn't make anyone safer, other than perhaps someone wanting to do harm to my family or me.

I imagine the same is true for the tens of millions of other lawful gun owners.

Leftists must be pretty damn stupid not to understand that.

Because of all the grand words and high ideals of the Constitution, the 2ND Amendment is the only part of the document that reminds the federal government, as well as the citizens, that the people will not be deprived of the means to protect the rest.

Remove those 27 words and the remainder is absolutely nothing.

” those guns shoot more than 100,000 people a year. “

Oh yeah, right. Sounds like someone just made up a nice, large, round number.

Outside of Detroit, DC, New Orleans etc... gun crime is relatively low.

Back in the time of the Revolution it was common for private individuals to own and use cannon that could fire anywhere from 32 to 42 pounds of lead at one shot.

These were mostly crew served weapons.

If we got back to the standards of the 18th century we definitely could be doing some stuff eh!
