Statue of famed Penn St. coach Paterno taken down

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The famed statue of Joe Paterno was taken down from outside the Penn State football stadium Sunday as the NCAA announced it would be issuing sanctions against the university whose top officials were accused in a scathing report of burying child sex abuse allegations against a now-convicted retired assistant.

Workers lifted the 7-foot-tall statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium as the 100 to 150 students watched, some chanting, "We are Penn State."

Yes, I think JP would be glad the statue is gone. Joe Paterno was NOT in favor of the statue from the get-go. He rejected all that sort of stuff. And he NEVER came into the stadium running with the team with his index finger extended as though proclaiming #1. In fact, one thing that rankled me about Joe at pre-game interviews, etc., was his reluctance to crow or boast or even predict a victory.

I personally think the statue should be melted down, recast into 6” versions of it, or even of Nittany Lions, which would be sold at $1,000 a pop, and all the money donated to organizations which minister to abused children.

A man’s life work destroyed by his ignoring a pedophile.

Well, that and lying to a grand jury about it. If Paterno was alive, he'd likely be looking at perjury charges.

They should take his statue, heat it up so they can bend it over at the waist. Then have a statue of Sandusky standing behind him driving him to Hardees.

Bury it, burn it- either way is fine with me. And shame on those who excuse this pedophile enabler with “Well, he was still a great football coach so he should be excused”.

In trying to protect his legacy, Paterno kept quiet and hoped it would all go away. If he stepped up and did the right thing immediately then he would have protected his legacy and the school, the list of victims would have stalled.

His legacy has been destroyed, the school is in deep sh!t.

Bad call.

I keep thinking back to the first game Penn State played after this story broke. I think it was against Nebraska. The student body was in the stands protesting the school for “looking at” Paterno in this story. They had signs that supported Paterno even though they really didn’t know his degree of involvement in the case.

I wonder what percentage of those students understand now?

You mean like Hitler? What was he convicted of?

Good point. Lee Harvey Oswald was never tried and convicted either. So we should give him the benefit of the doubt as well. /s

On principle, I agree with you.

But in a more practical sense, do you really believe he was completely innocent in this whole thing?

I am fine with innocent until guilty, but I am not sure he would come out of this OK.

Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Chairman Mao, Mousy Dung, Pol Pot, OJ Simpson, Bill Clinton, the kenyan CSer — the list of subhuman filth that has never been convicted, but who are still subhuman filth is quite long. Pablo Escobar, Al Capone (only concealed weapon and tax evasion), etc.

The NCAA is applying the “Cam Newton rule” to the school for its complicit aiding and abetting of child rape but first they applied the “Reggie Bush rule” . Riggie lost his heisman ( except he never gave it back) but nothing was done to the school for buying a house!!. This was the paterno statue removal. — Riggie Bush rule” now complete . Now for the “CAM Newton Rule”. Here absolutely nothing will be done because the raped boys fathers were not told!! This is the Reverse Rule” Either way the school will not be punished even though rapes were known to be going on by administrators (Paterno) and employees (janitors) but no harm was dome because the children didn’t complain. I expect totally nothing to be done to “Ped” State except $1 billion in law suits but the NCAA will remain consistent with its hands off, do nothing, transparent worthlessness.

Good point. It really is kind of silly when folks say "but..but...he was never tried in a court of law." Like we're not supposed to have any opinions at all about a crime until a jury speaks.

The concept "innocent until proved guilty" just means society cannot punish a person without first proving guilt. It does not mean we cannot have opinions.

“I guess dying was easier than further abusing his power by killing all the witnesses.”

***

Forgive my pea brain, but that last sentence makes no sense.

Understand that I have no affection for Mr. Paterno. I'm not a friend or relative, or connected in any way to Penn State. I am, however, concerned with fairness. Under this administration, the rule of law applies less and less. We already have a corrupted Justice Department and the courts, from the Supremes on down, have all but thrown the Constitution out the window.

If we convict Paterno in the media, what stops anyone from accusing another wrongdoing and have that person vilified without a trial? I envision that, should Obama be re-elected, we will see more and more of these trials by media. That frightens me.

Perfectly said. I can’t shoot you in the head because I think you’re guilty of a crime, but I sure as hell am allowed to think you’re a maggot.

Bury it.

Sounds appropriate since he tried to bury the truth.
