Denver shooting suspect James Holmes purchased some 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the internet before carrying out hismassacre at a midnight screening of Batman.
The ammunition was part of a massive arsenal he gathered in the run-up to the killings, which also included four guns legally purchased at local gun shops.
His weapons were two Glock pistols, a 12-guage shotgun, and a high-powered AR-15 assault rifle fitted with a drum magazine allowing a fire rate of 50 to 60 rounds per minute.
Dan Oates, the chief of police in Aurora, Colorado, where Holmes killed 12 people and injured 58 others, said: He purchased four guns at local gun shops and through the internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, more than 3,000 rounds of 0.223 ammunition for the assault rifle, 3,000 rounds of 0.40 caliber ammunition for the two Glocks in his possession, and 300 rounds for the 12 gauge shotgun.
Also through the internet he purchased multiple magazines for the 0.223 caliber assault rifle including one 100-round drum magazine which was recovered from the scene.
Even if it was semi-automatic Im told by experts that with that drum magazine he could have got off 50 to 60 rounds within a minute. As far as we know it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in the theatre.
My understanding is that all the weapons he possessed, he possessed legally and all the clips that he possessed, he possessed legally and all the ammunition he possessed, he possessed legally.
Holmes is also believed to have joined a casual sex website where he apparently hinted at his plans for his killing spree, asking potential suitors: Will you visit me in prison?

He HAD to have gotten it, at some point in his life
Another very good point. Where did he learn to shoot and reload? This whole thing points to a well-put-together operation. This guy is an operative. Where did he get the money to buy all of that ordnance with no real job? Hmmmmm???
No. It was shockingly easy to follow a script that had been done before, in other countries, in print, and, on screen.
That it is shockingly easy for Americans to run and NOT RUSH the shooter is discouraging. Then again, these people were sitting ducks...and unarmed to a man.
Too many of us, Freepers, need to take some Coast Guard boating classes!
You know, living in CO with a CCW I’ve thought about what would have happened had I been there.
I’m pretty sure the honest answer is either died or ran. If I had a shot and took it, it wouldn’t have worked. He was in all over body armor with a ballistic helmet. He wore a gas mask and was tossing out tear gas grenades. Honestly someone with even a top end CCW pistol would have had a very very slim chance at best. You don’t bring a pistol to a rifle fight, and you sure as hell don’t when the target is pistol proof.
This dirtbag really was just too well prepared.
But as to the original article- who cares if he had 6k rounds of ammo? I doubt he fired off more than 100 all told. The other 5900 are a moot point.
Purchasing 6k rounds is pretty moot for any given tactical situation unless you happen to be toting a minigun.
Happened to you too, huh?
Two glocks and an AR15 is going to be around $2K
Not just to shoot and reload - but to do it in full body armor, in the dark, in a closed area saturated with tear gas, while masked!
Ask anyone with military training if this is an operation a first time gun shooter just up and does, managing to shoot 71 targets in the dark, with no training or range practice, with no dry run, based on reading directions from the manual or paying a video game
“Anyone hear about the Ft. Hood shooter lately? Murdered people several years ago in an action of domestic Islamic terrorism”
No, because as Mark Steyn pointed out, Allahu Akbar is Arabic for, “Move along, nothing to see here.”
See #15
3K rounds of .223 will be about $1.5K
3K of 40SW will be another $1K
4 guns is a massive arsenal?
I’m assuming this writer is a Limey Tw@t. They (Limies) have no appreciation for the concept of 2nd Amendment rights.
OTOH, they’re probably still smarting from what a bunch of armed Scots-Irish did to them a couple on centuries ago.
Glocks will run you maybe $600 each or so (might be less, I don’t price Glocks since I don’t like them) for the .40S&W pistols. A 12 gauge should be another $500 or so. The AR price could be all over the place. Last gun show I saw some as low as $800 (a bit under). Those large magazines run you around $100. 6K of ammo is going to be fairly expensive (I can get reloads for around $1800 for that many).
Let’s claim a ballpark of less than $5k.
If one goes to the range once a week, and expends 100 rounds of ammo at each visit, then 6,000 rounds is a year's supply. There's lots of gun owners who have more.
The punk could have charged it all with no intention of ever paying the bill.
If this guy had been a Mexican drug lord, our government would have GIVEN him the guns.
Then he could have shot 100 Mexicans (and a border agent) and the media would not just be silent, but cover it up.
Thus is life in Obamaland. We fear citizens and count terrorists as friends. :)
At some point they may start to describe his residence as a "compound".
