Breitbart News spoke to James Michael Holmes, the Tea Party member falsely identified this morning by ABC News' Brian Ross and George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America as the possible suspect in the mass shooting early this morning at a screening of the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. He is a 52-year-old Hispanic conservative who joined the Tea Party after becoming disillusioned with the Republican party.
"It was freaky," said Holmes, describing his reaction when ABC News speculated that he was the culprit who entered a crowded theater and opened fire on dozens of innocent men, women, and children. He disconnected his telephone and says that he is worried about members of his family who might be contacted by the media.
ABC News has since corrected its initial report, but tried to share the blame with "social media" and "members of the public" at first:
An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. Several other local residents with similar names were also contacted via social media by members of the public who mistook them for the suspect.
Now the correction has been updated, with ABC News and Brian Ross taking full responsibility, and apologizing:
An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.

Typical of the media. They shoot from the hip and then say “whoopsie” our bad? Now this poor guy will be harassed by who knows who because of them.
Any one named Holmes that was contacted by the media assuming they were the shooter needs to sue the crap out of that media, apology or not. This crap is out of control especially when the shooter was in custody
Hold ‘em accountable.
Mr. Holmes, may I suggest you say nothing more and contact the most rabid, media-hating lawyer you can find...
and sue the obama out of them. Go for the jugular, they certainly wouldn’t hesitate to do the same to you.
This is now the DNC’s worst nightmare... put a HISPANIC TEA PARTY member on every news outlet whom was FALSELY accused by the Leftist Lame media!
LIBEL.
"Never let the truth or the facts get in the way of a good America-bashing story!" - The journalists' Hypocritic Oath.
Instead of issueing a statement Ross should be apologizing on the air every 5 minutes.
Proof? We don’ need no steenking proof. We’re with the MSM.
LIBEL.
MALICE...anti-Tea Party and racist media
You can’t un-ring a bell.
Were I king, I would shut down ABC and launch an IRS investigation into all corporate officers, employees, and advertisers.
An expensive lawsuit has a chance of getting Brian Ross fired. And there’s no denying that ABC has the kind of deep pockets ambulance chasers have wet dreams about. Which is why ABC and Ross both apologized. Hopefully too late for them to avoid paying out a bunch of cash to Holmes.
I agree. When a conservative apologizes for something, it's never good enough, it's never accepted. No amount of apologies are considered sufficient. The person is expected to pay for it with their career. The same should apply here. Take these bastards for every cent they have!
Emotional attacks rather than logical ones....it’s lynch mob politics. It is promoted by liberalism.
Even breitbart seems to think that identifying this guy as an Hispanic is more important than identifying him as an American. The left has won in battle of taking control of our discussions.
If i was this guy I’d be telling ABC to get their checkbook out.
I’ve never sued anyone, but I sure do agree with you. The MSM need to be restrained from their libelous behavior.
While it may be true that they got the information from outside the ABC organization, that doesn't excuse the fact that they friggin tripped over themselves to report it, rather than investigate first. The whole focus of the "apology" is to blame the source rather than their own libtard agenda for making them careless and irresponsible.
