Yet in Alabama I would say that the wealthy are typically thin or at least less-than-obese while the poorest 15 percent are often very fat.

Obesity is a disease of affluence.In my several visits to Third World countries I can't recall having seen a fat person. Also depends on education in this country..most people I meet with college degrees are conscious of their weight and take steps to at least keep it under control...they had ambition/perseverance/determination/self control to obtain higher degree.
Most of the people I see who are obese or overweight tend to be lower middle class or poor in this country.
95% of the people in my gym have a college degree.

Look at photos of Americans in the 40’s and before. There are virtually no obese people.
As the population ages it gains weight so there are some older folks who look heavy
