All three evening newscasts on Tuesday and two out of the three morning shows on Wednesday skipped the dramatic story of an elderly Florida man who saved a cafe full of people from gun-wielding robbers. Only Good Morning America covered the story of seventy-one-year-old Samuel Williams using his own weapon fend off attackers.
News reader Josh Elliot lauded the "gun-toting senior citizen" for his quick action and for "not taking it anymore." Co-host George Stephanopoulos narrated the video: "There he is right there. Takes them on. Saves the whole cafe." Elliott praised it as "remarkable." He misleadingly described, "Williams does have a gun license and is not expected to be charged." [See video below. Elderly Man Saves a Cafe Full of People By Shooting Gun-Wielding Robbers; Only ABC Notes
However, Florida is a "shall issue" state. It's the carrying of the concealed weapon that requires a permit, not a "gun license" to own one.
Stephanopoulos offered a snarky quip after the segment ended, critiquing the old man: "And what a uniform. Bermuda shorts and a golf cap."
CBS This Morning, NBC's Today, as well as World News, Evening News and Nightly News all ignored the story.
A 2000 study by the Media Research Center found:
Morning News Shows Favored the Anti-Gun Position by 13 to 1. More than half of morning news gun policy segments (208) tilted away from balance. Of those segments, 93 percent (193) pushed the liberal, anti-gun position, while only six percent (15) promoted the pro-gun position. ABC’s Good Morning America (92 to 1) was the most biased morning show.
News Programs Are Twice as Likely to Use Anti-Gun Soundbites. Anti-gun soundbites were twice as frequent as pro-gun ones—412 to 209. (Another 471 were neutral.)
A transcript of the July 18 segment can be found below:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Look at this stunning moment caught on tape. Two robbers go in to hold up an internet café and what a surprise they got. A 71-year-old man steps in, pulls out his own gun. There he is right there. Takes them on. Saves the whole café. We'll have all of that in just a little while.
ROBIN ROBERTS: He wasn't going to take it anymore.

JOSH ELLIOTT: And a brazen hold up in Florida didn't exactly go off as planned, again, thanks to one gun-toting senior citizen. Look at the surveillance video. Again, we just saw it, but two armed robberies storming an internet cafe. Watch the back right of your screen. Seventy-one-year-old Samuel Williams is not taking that anymore. Pulls his own gun, takes aim and would save the day. The suspects actually made a run for it. They were hit twice as they flee out the door. The suspects later arrested. We should put out, Williams does have a gun license and is not expected to be charged. Remarkable.
STEPHANOPOULOS: And what a uniform. Bermuda shorts and a golf cap.
Only broke people go to internet cafes anyway lol
Megyn was just looking at it with her lawyer’s jaundiced eye.She did not seem adamant in what she said. And I don’t think she necessarily personally thought the man’s actions were unjustified.Just my opinion.
His other option would be to try to get the crooks to drop their weapons and get their hands up. But note that the robber on the right turns and points his weapon at Williams who then shot him first. So taking one out which resulted in the other one running was the best approach.
The lesson to be learned here is that if you carry a concealed weapon know how to fire it and don't hesitate to shoot in a situation like this when the gunman is ready to shoot you.
Some of us who aren't old coots (yet) are past taking it too. God bless this man.
So were the perps Amish? Can’t see their beards though.
The impressive thing, if you watched the video, was the cool and methodical way he took out the trash. Like a hunter taking out snakes. Kudos to a genuine man.
Yeah, very odd. Didn’t get that at all.
He could have saved the State of Florida a lot of money if he had finished the job by putting in another clip and sent these punks to where they belong. Now Florida taxpayers will have to pay the medical bills for these scum as well as the cost of their lawyers and the cost of keeping them incarcerated hopefully for a long time.
Even with our two straight "A" granddaughters, correcting the "Ebonics-pollution" that continually strives to corrupt their English speech has become a serious challenge...
"But 'diversity' is strength" -- dontchaknow...?!
Moosake!!
The tape is lying and so are all the people in the cafe. They were only armed with ice tea and Skittles from the local 7-Eleven. They can prove all this to be true. They were on the phone with someone named DeeDee at the time. And the old white guy diddled his cousin back when he was 7.
So when do the riots start????
I’ll second that.
The lesson to be learned here is that if you carry a concealed weapon know how to fire it and don’t hesitate to shoot in a situation like this when the gunman is ready to shoot you.
and take out the the biggest threat first when confronted with multiple criminals.
You betcha. I am a cootess but we also can be bad*sses.
Yeah, I stopped playing games a long time ago!
LOL! When I was writing that, I was in a bit of a rush. It was embarrassing because I know better.
One had a superficial wound to the arm. The other hit once in a butt cheek and once in hip.
Looked like he used a Kahr .380 maybe?
Amazing how many vids one can watch where people get hit and remain standing and run away. Sure not Hollywood. Why it’s best to carry high capacity and shoot them into the ground.
Now both made bail and the dumb@ass media gave out the hero’s name.
Hopefully he has bigger guns at home.

Shocking!!
Never try to fight an old man. If he's too old and tired to beat you, he'll just kill you.
I think the line becomes fuzzy when the robbers run. The old man was no longer shooting in self-defense, but running after them and trying to gun them down.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t see anything wrong with shooting robbers in the back as they run. That’s the price they pay when they chose to try to rob someone.
But the law is murky on the subject.
Actually hitting the ringleader so he spends life in the Graybar Hotel under the moniker "Buttshot" is better.
