Democrats are making increasingly explicit threats about their willingness to let nearly $600 billion worth of tax hikes and spending cuts take effect in January unless Republicans drop their opposition to higher taxes for the nations wealthiest households.
Emboldened by signs that GOP resistance to new taxes may be weakening, senior Democrats say they are prepared to weather a fiscal event that could plunge the nation back into recession if the new year arrives without an acceptable compromise.
In a speech Monday, Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.), the Senates No. 4 Democrat and the leader of the caucuss campaign arm, plans to make the clearest case yet for going over what some have called the fiscal cliff.
If we cant get a good deal, a balanced deal that calls on the wealthy to pay their fair share, then I will absolutely continue this debate into 2013, Murray plans to say, according to excerpts of the speech provided to The Washington Post.
If the tax cuts from the George W. Bush era expire and taxes go up for everyone, the debate will be reset, Murray is expected to say. Every proposal will be a tax-cut proposal, according to the excerpts, and Republicans would no longer be boxed in by their pledge not to raise taxes.
If middle-class families start seeing more money coming out of their paychecks next year, are Republicans really going to stand up and fight for new tax cuts for the rich? Are they going to continue opposing the Democrats middle-class tax cut once the slate has been wiped clean? I think they know this would be an untenable political position.
Murrays address, set to be delivered at the Brookings Institution, is meant to influence both the Nov. 6 election and the lame-duck legislative session in November and December

That's because their staffers have already told them what the top 2% is paying. If they get pinned into quoting a number, they'll have to cite a "reasonable" one. And then someone will point out that threshold is already met.
Do you know what proportion of federal individual income taxes the top 2% actually pay? I'm not trying to make you look bad. I'm just trying to point out that few people actually know.
I didn't pick 2% arbitrarily. It's where singles with 200K AGI and married couples with 250K AGI fall on the scale, according to the IRS's own data.
And according to the IRS's data, the top 2% paid 45.35% of all federal individual income taxes in 2009. That's down from 48.68% in 2007.
(David, I pinged you on this response because I realized I misread the table in my last posting to you. I accidentally read off the numbers for the top 3% earlier.)
Yeah, so women could work - except they were forbidden to work. So women could go outside the home - except they were forbidden to go outside the home without an adult male relation.
That is so stupid it should HURT!
Yet Washington keeps electing her.
Who is more the fool, the fool or the fool who follows?
“At this rate, were going off a fiscal cliff no matter what”
Exactly. There is nothing that can stop the collapse that is coming. Its too late and the train is moving too fast down the tracks. The only thing to be doing is preparing to try to survive it.
Bingo! In other words, the DemocratIdiot are betting against/for the inevitable. Let’s be sure to send them all ‘Thank You!’ notes given they have already spent over $5 trillion in less than 4 years. =.=
The Washington (dumb as a) Post cannot get through ONE PARAGRAPH without a lie.
The taxes will be on households with the highest INCOME - many of the wealthiest households do NOT have high income - they have a high amount of wealth but low income.
People in their 30’s and 40’s tend to have higher income but lower wealth.
People in their 60’s and 70’s tend to have low incomes and high wealth.
...so the RATS CONFESS...vote for us so we’ll raise taxes.
..BUT if you vote them out in NOVEMBER they can’t.
Hmmmmmmm what to do, what to do
Push them and see what happens. Heck, we’re at the bottom of the canyon, why worry about being pushed over the “cliff?”
fixed
Hahaha - Jokes on them, we’re already over the cliff. :)
There is a 7% union participation rate in the private sector. So there is a 93% chance that your hypthetical screwdriver is non-union made. Secondly, labor costs on average bwtween 4 and 10% of the retail price of manufactured goods, so at most your $1.00 screwdriver would be $1.10.
What is the old saying? “Don’t pi$$ on me and tell me it’s raining.”
The Rats ramped up spending, without a budget, without a plan to pay for it, with the full intention of forcing Republicans to acquiesce on raising taxes. Raise taxes (which will not cure the deficit), and they will start the cycle all over again. If we are going to have a Rat induced government default, I would prefer it be now instead of later.
While Americans are struggling to survive, the Dems play games.
If I were a Dem, I’d be smiling too - most of them are headed for easy re-election. :)
There is no mention of this by any Republican currently serving in Office simply because they are afraid to tout any positives from the Bush era. It's like the good old days of 5% Unemployment, 4.5% GDP Growth and where the largest Budget Deficit was only a third of the size of the smallest Obama Budget Deficit never happened. And to think that people were saying it would take us ten years to recover from the Trillion Dollar economic impact of 9/11. In fact, Fred said that the increase in Tax Revenues was the largest ever in the shortest time ever. Federal Tax Revenues grew from approximately $1.75 Trillion in 2003 to 2.5 Trillion in 2007.
Even in the age of Obamaville the Federal Government is still collecting over $2.2 Trillion Dollars thanks to those Tax Rate Cuts. Funny how everything went to hell in a hand basket after Pelosi and Reid took over in January 2007 and Obama began his first and last Term as a Senator at the same time. Coincidence?
Patty Murray is such an embarrassment to the Senate, they have suspended her dental benefits.
Oh, I don’t see what is gained by casting blame and assertions and rettrick all over the place. After all, there’s plenty of blame to go around. Reasonable people can agree to disagree. Why is compromisse such a dirty word.
My response to Pelosi and Schumer: PROVE IT, YOU FIRST!
After the election, comrade, you won’t be able to FIND a democrat in Washington for a while.
If not, this is an example of unions driving up cost.
It's not just wages, it's your union demands that drive up the cost.
City and state taxes are high because of unions. If you haven't noticed they are going broke because of union demands and they are wanting to raise taxes even more.
Taxes are passed along to the consumer every step of the way, from the iron ore to the steel used to make the screwdriver to the screwdriver itself, until the final consumer has to pay them all.
It's all the union hidden cost that drive up the prices, not just the one you see, they guy making the screwdriver.
I would have thought they might have gotten a clue when their donations started drying up ... but instead we got Obama preaching "Your successful business isn't due to you!", a sentiment that reveals his socialist agenda more clearly than ever before.
